- Each SME could pay £90+/year to run just one computer, the findings say
- Most employees leave their devices on even when they are not there
- This could be the perfect opportunity to modernize with energy efficient technology
Although many companies have broadly tightened return-to-office policies, many are still struggling with above-average energy bills as a result of the behavior of their employees, new research shows.
The Uswitch research shows that running one computer can cost SMEs more than £90 a year, with little help for employees when it comes to saving electricity.
About a fifth of employees admit to leaving laptops, desktops and monitors on simply because they don’t have to pay their energy bills.
Employee habits are causing office energy bills to rise
However, this is not just a daily habit. A quarter leave them on during holidays or extended closures, 22% rarely or never turn off the monitor when they are away for extended periods of time, and 21% rarely or never put their computer to sleep when it is idle.
On the other hand, the number of employees who make proactive energy-conscious decisions is low. Only about a third adjust screen brightness to reduce energy consumption.
Business Energy Forecast Ben Gallizzi is urging businesses to conduct a business energy audit as a starting point to identify where electricity is being wasted. From there they have a number of routes.
In addition to replacing older, energy-inefficient appliances, small and medium-sized businesses must train their workforce and refine employee policies and expectations. “There are opportunities for entrepreneurs and leaders to better communicate energy policy and the benefits of reducing energy for both sustainability and financial purposes,” he wrote.
They can also try to lower bills by finding other providers with lower unit rates. Commercial renewal periods generally extend up to six months before the contract end date, Gallizzi explains.
Even combined, these changes may not have a huge impact on your energy bill, but in today’s cash-strapped economy, every savings adds up.
