The Finnish-British pairing of Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten, the second seeds, proved their mental strength in a hard-fought battle with the all-British duo of Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski.
They won 7-5 6-3 after 90 minutes to become the Nitto ATP Finals doubles champions as a team and reversed the round robin result when the two pairs met in their John McEnroe Group match 7-6 (7) 3-6 10-7.
In the semi-finals they eliminated the top-seeded title favourites, home couple Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vasssori, 6-4 6-3 to reach the title match for the first time. In the final itself, they produced some stunning shots and did not concede a single break point throughout the match.
“It’s hard to describe,” Heliovaara said. “All week I’ve been looking at the winners list, with huge winners, and I thought, if my name was ever on there, I would be so proud. To be there next to Henry is surreal.”
Heliovaara and Patten finish the season with a win-loss record of 50-20, capturing the trophy at the Australian Open and lifting the trophies at the Paris Masters and Beijing 500.
It was a double celebration for Patten, who got engaged to his partner Ellie Stone in Turin earlier this week.
“The tennis is pretty good, but the engagement was something special,” Patten added. “It was a complete dream for me. Ellie has been here all week supporting me. I am a very happy guy now. I feel incredibly lucky to have a partner like her and a partner like Harri.”
Meanwhile, disappointment for Salisbury, who had won his past fourteen matches at the ATP Finals and won the title twice (2022-23) with American Rajeev Ram before failing to qualify in 2024. Skupski competed in his first final at the year-end event.
The British also lost title matches at the French and US Opens this year and end their season with a 46-22 win-loss record.
