No. No. 8 John Carroll entered the Thanksgiving break with a nice win over No. 15 Baldwin Wallace, while No. 10 Bates and No. 22 Elizabethtown needed some extra help to beat their opponents in Tuesday night’s Division III basketball action.

John Carroll held Baldwin Wallace to more turnovers (20) than field goals (19), and the Blue Streaks remained perfect with a 52-45 victory over former conference rival Baldwin Wallace. John Carroll held the Yellow Jackets to six points in the first period and five in the third and never trailed. JCU All-American Ava Ryncarz posted a double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds) on a night when both teams struggled to score. JCU and BW combined to shoot 38 for 107 (36 percent) from the field and 10 for 39 from three.

John Carroll (5-0) snapped a five-game losing streak against Baldwin Wallace in the teams’ only scheduled meeting this season.

Southern Maine pushed No. 10 Bates to overtime before the Bobcats prevailed over the Huskies, 70-66, in a meeting of undefeated Maine teams. After Elsa Daulerio’s jumper gave Bates a 60-55 lead in the final minute of regulation, Dakota Shipley hit two free throws and then a tying three-pointer for Southern Maine, sending the game to overtime. Daulerio scored again to break a 66 tie with 29 seconds left, and Sophie Spolter added two free throws to ice Bates’ win.

No. 22 Elizabethtown topped Messiah, 80-77 in overtime, after a career night for Allyia Kennedy and another big performance from Makenna Mummert. Kennedy scored 29 points, including 20 in the second half, and Mummert scored 10 points in overtime for the Blue Jays. Mummert is averaging 19 points and 37 minutes per game for Elizabethtown (5-0).

No. 20 Bethel returned to the court after a layoff of nearly two weeks and defeated Concordia-Moorhead 52-44. The Royals, whose last game was a 61-53 loss to UW-Stout on Nov. 12, held the Cobbers to 17 field goals against 23 turnovers. Emily Erickson scored 18 points and grabbed seven boards for Bethel (1-1), which will host Concordia-Moorhead on Jan. 24.

No. 23 Carroll showed why it belongs in the Top 25 by overwhelming Chicago 73-52 in Waukesha, Wisconsin. The Pioneers shot 53 percent from the field (28 for 53) and got 22 points in 23 minutes from All-American Natalie Gricius. Carroll entered the national rankings this week with a 3-2 record, with both losses coming against Top 10 foes.

Not every newly ranked team did equally well.

Four starters scored in double figures for Loras, and the Duhawks did so at No. 18 Wisconsin Lutheran, 63-60. After Kenly Frey’s three-pointer gave Wisconsin Lutheran a 51-47 lead midway through the fourth quarter, Loras went on an 11-0 run capped by Claire Wagner’s three-point play. Abby Cole’s three pulled the Warriors within two with 26 seconds left, but Loras held WLC scoreless the rest of the way. Wagner outscored Loras (4-2) with 17 points on 8-for-15 shooting.

Carthage dominated the middle periods in a 60-51 home win over No. 25 Coe. The Firebirds outscored the Kohawks 32-18 in the second and third quarters, and Carthage’s balanced attack offset a 20-point performance from Coe guard Caydee Kirkham.

It was a relatively quiet night on the men’s side, although two conferences started play before the holiday break.

In the NJAC, No. 14 Montclair State handled Rowan 100-86 at home as Jacob Morales scored 24 points on 9-for-18 shooting with six 3-pointers. The Red Hawks (5-0, 1-0 NJAC) shot 45 percent from behind the arc with 18 made 3-pointers. No. 20 TCNJ also defended its home court, defeating William Paterson 85-68. Matthew Solomon scored 20 points and 15 rebounds for the Lions (5-1, 1-0 NJAC), who outrebounded the Pioneers 53-34. Kean and New Jersey City also opened their conference seasons with wins.

Webster shot 47 percent in the second half and pulled away from Westminster (Mon.), 70-60, in both teams’ conference opener. Ethan Chartrand scored 15 points for Webster (5-0, 1-0 SLIAC), which has defeated Westminster in seven of their last eight games. Lyon, Eureka and Spalding also opened SLIAC play with wins.
