The FDA has announced a radical shift in its COVID vaccination policy.
The agency says it will now only recommend COVID vaccines to adults over 65 and people who are immunocomromitated.
It marks a major shift in current policy, which recommends a dose of the updated Covid vaccine to everyone of six months and older.
And it cannot leave millions unable to get the vaccine through their health insurance.
But FDA -Head Dr. Marty Makary says that the change is needed, adding that there is no clear advantage of vaccinating millions of healthy people against Covid every year.
He says that this policy has promoted public distrust and many led to rejecting essential vaccinations, such as those against measles – where the US is currently fighting its greatest outbreak in two decades.
The new policy was unveiled in an editorial that was published on Tuesday in the New England Journal of Medicine, written by Dr. Makary and the head of the FDA on vaccines Dr. Vinay Prasad.
It will be unveiled during a press conference later today and will probably affect people who are looking for an updated COVID recording in the fall of 2025.

They wrote: ‘In the past two seasons, the recording of the annual Covid Booster has been bad. Less than 25 percent of Americans received boosters every year.
“There can even be a wrinkle effect: public confidence in vaccination in general has decreased, resulting in a reluctance to vaccination that even influences vital immunization programs, such as those for measles-mumps-Rubella vaccination.”
The change will tailor the US more closely to other countries, such as the VK, Canada and Australia – all of which recommend only updated Covid shots to older adults.
The recording of the updated COVID vaccinations has fallen, with the latest CDC data that demonstrates that barely 20 percent of adults received the shot from this viral season.
The couple added: ‘While all other countries with a high income limit vaccine recommendations to older adults (usually those older than 65), or those with a high risk of serious Covid …
‘… The US has taken over a one-size-fits-all regulatory framework and have granted a broad marketing permit to all Americans older than six months.
‘American policy is sometimes justified by claiming that the American people are not advanced enough to understand on age and risk -based recommendations.
“We reject this vision.”
Makary and PRASAD said that Covid vaccines would be approved for young adults, but only after pharmaceutical companies can show that they create protective antibody concentrations in the group.
Dr. Noel Brewer, expert in the field of public health at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and who is in the CDC’s Vaccine Recommendation Committee, said CNN He supported the change.

‘The proposed policy brings the US in accordance with other countries. This global view of public health is a welcome development, “he said.
Dr. Paul Offit, a pediatrician in the Piladelphia children’s hospital and a member of the FDA vaccines Advisory Group, did not agree.
He said: ‘We used an evidence-based approach of Covid vaccination, but they dive into and believe that for the first time, as they say, we say “Gold Standard” data, robust data, because we don’t have that, but we do have that.
“That is why we have made good decisions about the vaccines. That is why that vaccine is remarkably safe. I mean, the mrna vaccines are remarkably safe. ‘
