President Donald Trump’s doomsday scenario has been recently spotted in Los Angelesleaving many wondering if we are in the middle of a global thermonuclear war. The answer to that is a resounding “it sure doesn’t look like it,” but it’s got me wondering something else: What actually happens on a plane on Judgment Day? Air Force One did a pretty good job in its role on “Independence Day,” what does this E-4B do better?
If Air Force One is an Oval Office in the sky, then the doomsday plane – the E-4B Night Watch for the armed forces, which is arguably cooler than just calling it doomsday – is a mobile version of Dr. Strangelove. Instead of a series comfortable sofas and leather chairsthe doomsday plane is packed with satellite communicators, emergency telephones and radio antennas. Essentially, the doomsday plane is intended to let the president and secretary of defense coordinate the military from 30,000 feet, even in times of war.
Not just for traveling press conferences
While Air Force One is intended to allow the president, staff, and even the press to travel in relative comfort, the doomsday plane is built and equipped for one purpose: to maintain lines of communication when every other piece of infrastructure has failed. It’s nice to know that such aircraft are always ready, if only because such readiness means seeing one not mean the end of the world – one of the planes might just get fuel.
