Washington:
President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the United States will soon sign minerals and natural resources with Ukraine and that his efforts to achieve a peace agreement for the country “went pretty well” after his conversations this week with the Russian and Ukrainian leaders.
Trump made the comments during an event of the White House after signing an order to increase the American production of critical minerals.
“We also sign similarities at different locations to unlock rare earths and minerals and many other things around the world,” he said.
“But in particular Ukraine, we are doing very well with regard to Ukraine and Russia. And one of the things we do is a deal very soon with regard to rare earths with Ukraine.”
This week, Trump referred to his discussions with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Ukrainian President Volodyymyr Zelenskiy, aimed for the end of the war in Ukraine, which Russia invaded in 2022.
“We would like to see that it would come to an end, and I think we are doing reasonably well in that respect,” Trump said.
“So hopefully we would save thousands of people a week from dying. That’s what it’s all about. They die so unnecessarily, and I believe we get it done. We’ll see what happens, but I believe we get it done.”
Ukraine and the US said they had agreed this month to conclude an extensive agreement as quickly as possible for the development of the critical mineral agents of Ukraine, which Trump sees as a means to repay the United States for help to Kiev.
Attempts to close the deal stumbled after a disastrous meeting of the White House between Trump and Zenskiy at the end of last month.
