Trump says that right -wing activist Charlie Kirk died after shooting

Legal activist Charlie Kirk died after a shooting at an outdoor speaking event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, according to President Trump.

NPR works to independently verify Kirk’s death.

“The big and even legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead,” Trump wrote in a social social post. “Nobody understood or had the heart of youth in the United States of America better than Charlie.”

Utah Valley University said that a suspect in the shooting is not in custody. In an e -mail to NPR, university spokeswoman Ellen Treanor said that a person had been held earlier, but said: “That person was released, it is still an active investigation.”

The university said in a position that “at about 12:10 a shot was fired at the visiting speaker, Charlie Kirk. He was hit and taken out of the location by his security.” In a later post it said that the campus was closed and that the police were going to build to build people from the campus.

Treanor told NPR that a shot called from a building about 200 meters from Kirk, which was invited by a student group.

Kirk is the head of the conservative youth organization, Turning Point USA, which “started with a”American comeback tour. “The event at Utah Valley University was the first of 15 planned stops at university campuses throughout the country.
