Important facts
Trump told Zenskyy that he would give Ukraine “very good protection and very good security” if he was asked about security guarantees for Ukraine during his meeting with Zenskyy on Monday afternoon, an important question that Zenskyy is looking for in exchange to end the war with Russia.
Trump also said he would talk to Putin when the meeting with Zenskyy was over.
The British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, chairman of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and NATO-Secretary-General Mark Rutte will also meet.
The meeting came after Trump’s sitdown with Putin in Alaska on Friday ended without a ceasefiring.
Trump and Putin offered minimal details of their discussion, although Trump said on Saturday about the Truth Social.
Important background
Trump softened his rhetoric against Putin after their meeting on Friday and delayed support for Putin’s preference to end the war instead of a ceasefiring. Trump also declined his promise for ‘serious consequences’ if Putin did not agree to end the war and Fox News said that he did not think that sanctions were needed. The encounter of Trump with Zenskyy comes after their last oval office situation in a screaming competition between the Ukrainian leader and Trump and vice president JD Vance, who accused him of being ungrateful to being American support and ‘disrespectful’.
