The already chaotic mayor of New York City can soon become more messier.
Mayor Eric Adams is reportedly being given a senior role at the US Department of Housing and Urban Development by President Donald Trump’s team, per Politics. According to New York TimesWho reported the news for the first time, the move is generally seen as an attempt to convince Adams to drop his re -election – and to stimulate the momentum of the Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani, who shocked the branch by winning the Democratic Primary of June.
Adams, who maintains a cordial political relationship with Trump, did not deny a meeting with administration officers during a recent trip in Florida. Although his campaign later stated that he “did not meet Donald Trump” and “fully dedicated” to run, the mayor stopped briefly to exclude a potential role in Washington when they are printed by reporters.
The maneuvering behind the scenes emphasizes the extent to which Trump allies, central democrats and business leaders are willing to block Mamdani. Former governor Andrew Cuomo, who is independent, came to the fore as their favorite candidate, although polls letting him go badly. Advisors believe that Cuomo Mamdani could beat in a one-on-one matchup such as Adams and Republican nominated Curtis Sliwa leave the race.
On Tuesday, lawyer Jim Walden, a fifth candidate in the race, suspended his campaign and encouraged his rivals to endorse a single alternative to Mamdani. Even if Adams and Sliwa also suspend their campaigns, their names would probably stay on the mood because of the New York election law.
Coming there might be difficult. Sliwa has already rejected the idea of becoming a member of the Trump government and said he is not interested in a federal job. And any perception that Cuomo is the chosen candidate of Trump could turn out to be toxic in heavily democratic New York.
Mamdani in the meantime did not waste time to seize the reports and stated that “Cuomo is the choice of Trump for mayor … New Yorkers are sick of corrupt politics and back room deals.”
The position of Adams is further complicated by its legal problems. Federal Public Prosecutors dropped against him earlier this year, which brought speculation to be afraid that his relationship with Trump could form his political future, but the legal heat is still up to the former members of his administration, because top employees Ingrid Lewis-Martin and Jesse. Adams insists that he will stay in the race for the time being, and drives that he “has to cut more ribbons” before his term ends.
