Triedtotellya ($2.05) showed brilliant gate speed to take the lead, before settling for race favorite Mach Dan ($1.80).
Trainer-driver Rohan Hillier made his move for home, where he left with brilliant speed to be 5.6 meters ahead of Mach Dan, and it was 29.8 meters back to the rest, led by Keayang Fitzy to finish third.
The winner’s mile speed was 1:55.8s, while the previous record of 1:57.5s was jointly held by Kingman (24/2/11) and Willie Go West (22/01/2012).
Mach Dan’s individual mile speed was 1:56.0 seconds, Keayang Fitzy and The Shallows (4th) both recorded 1:57.4 seconds, all within the previous record.
It is the first time since the 2006 Inter Dominion that the track record at 2579 meters has been held by a Tasmania-bred pacer.
“His gate speed surprised me a little bit. I think he’s a better horse when he follows the speed, and we were in the right place at the right time.
“He just doesn’t feel like he’s running those times. He just does it so easily,” Hillier said after the race.
“It felt like we ran the first quarter in 33 (seconds), and then it flashed in 30.3 seconds, that’s how he feels.”
Rohan Hillier confirmed the pacer will remain in Tasmania and focus on the Group 1 Tasmania Cup preliminaries and final, which this year reverted to a mobile starting event with random barrier draw.
The other feature of the day was the $14,000 Paul Belcher @ Roberts Real Estate New Norfolk Cup (2579m), which was won by $4 Chance Fleetwood Rock, who was all the way in the lead with Gareth Rattray in the sulky.
He beat Imperial Laz ($9) by 1.8 meters, while Nova Baxter ($2.90 favorite) was third 2 meters away in 2:01.5 seconds.
“It wasn’t a surprise to me, once he pulled one, and with the G-man (Gareth Rattray) on him, I thought if he stepped he would win,” said winning trainer Wayne Yole after the race.
