Trevor Zegras and Extension Talk
Anthony Di Marco of The Daily Faceoff: Yes, it is time again for more possible contract extensions. This time we serve up Trevor Zegras for your consideration. Zegras enjoying a decent start for Philadelphia means the inevitable. Does the center, with thirteen points in twelve games, play a longer-term role for the Flyers?
There is one small detail. It’s still early and Philadelphia probably isn’t working on it yet. Remember, though, that Zegras turns 25 later in the season, and a six-to-eight-year contract provides cost certainty. Comparable, for example, is a player like Dylan Cozens. The problem is comparing a seven to about seven deal in the flat cap compared to the cap trajectory we’re seeing now.
Others look at how Cozens has evolved in his game and added value to his role. Zegras played just 88 games over the past two seasons with constantly changing roles and Greg Cronin to contend with, plus Pat Verbeek. Whether Anaheim was wrong or right is anyone’s guess. However, it seemed to hinder Zegras’ development.
NHL Rumors: Who Makes Team Canada?
The first impressions remain good. If Zegras continues to play this way, Dany Briere may have no choice but to lock up his hybrid center. The more time passes, the more money it can cost to keep the playmaker.
Carolina Always Big Game Fishing
David Pagnotta from the fourth period: People might be surprised that Carolina continues to look for big players. In fact, fishing becomes the name of the game in the NHL in late October and early November. Carolina still has over $8 million in cap space for 2025-26. Tom Dundon has spoken in the past about giving Eric Tulsky the green light to start acquiring talent.
With big-name talent always seemingly available, Carolina has competition with teams like Utah and Ottawa. Both are teams with bigger expectations. Ottawa is looking to make a deep playoff run, while Utah thinks they might have the basic ingredients to make a playoff impact.
NHL Rumors: Potential Trade Targets and Artemi Panarin
Stars are hard to find, but it seems Tulsky is always fishing. Goaltending seems to be the spot everyone points to, but Carolina doesn’t feel that way. If the opportunity arises, it will be explored, but the answer may already lie with Brandon Bussi. That would allow management to upgrade other positions and improve their special playoff teams, which have been lacking in the past few postseason runs.
Anyway, there’s never a dull moment in Carolina.
