Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving didn’t offer more solutions, but he also didn’t clarify where the organization stood during the meeting Tuesday with the mediaoutlining exactly where he believes the team has fallen short. As for who is responsible for fixing it, he pointed fingers at himself. It was one of his more candid updates since taking over as GM, and his message focused on three themes: responsibility, stability behind the bench and caution on the trade front.
Treliving takes the blame for slow starts
Treliving admitted that the Maple Leafs’ performance did not meet expectations and placed the responsibility squarely on himself.
“I take full responsibility. I am in charge of the hockey department… the responsibility lies with myself,” he said, emphasizing the need to get the group “back up and running” and to raise its daily standard.
Across the league, several teams have struggled out of the gate, creating a noisy trade market, but the Leafs GM isn’t hiding behind that context.
Craig Berube not on the hot seat
Despite mounting speculation and frustration among fans, Treliving defended head coach Craig Berube. “Craig didn’t become a bad coach overnight,” he said. “The easy thing is to get rid of the coach. I have all the confidence in the world in him.”
The Leafs’ identity was “too vanilla,” according to Treliving, and he believes the responsibility should come from the players, not from a coaching change.
Don’t expect large transactions
As Leafs fans call for a roster shakeup, Treliving came back hard on the idea that a deal will magically solve the problem. “You’re not in the business of trading problems,” he warned. Even if new players come in and “play the way we play, we’ll probably get the same result.”
No panic movements. No coaching change. These are the most important conclusions from his media conference. With that in mind, the pressure is now squarely on the Maple Leafs roster to respond – and quickly – as the season continues to slip away.
Given the team’s many injuries, that may not be an easy task.
Treliving said the Leafs are always exploring options, but cautioned that trades won’t solve the deeper problems facing the team.
No. Treliving expressed his full confidence in Berube and emphasized that the players, not the coach, must take their game to the next level.
He emphasized accountability, improved efforts and the need to recommit to the team’s identity and standards.
