Travers Headliner Sovereignty wins the Kentucky Derby (Jenny Doyle/Beyond the Wire)
By Jim Gazzale
It is amazing how fast the saratoga -meeting comes and goes every year. It feels like yesterday I saw yesterday how Sierra Leone stormed the piece to win the Whitney, but as they say “as a stone time rolls on”. It was sometimes an interesting encounter, CAWS, Aqueduct Level maps, but it is Saratoga, so we will miss it in October. A very intriguing and charged map has been set for Saturday, 5 straight class 1 closed by the Travers 2025. Unfortunately, not many grass searching at a high level would assume that Nyra is too afraid of rain that may ruin a map.
Spot and analysis
Race 8
The 2 horses brave Greta is the favorite of the morning line and for a good reason, the 2nd start a mild resignation for Mike Maker and works out lights. She has her only victory in a girl in aqueduct in which she preferred, came back in June and went softly against winners afterwards and ended a tough second. She will extend here and will probably be on or close to a slow to moderate pace. These peat routes in Saratoga have preferred Sluiters, so that’s where my eyes went in this race. The 8 Loveumissumeanit won last with a late final kick and I think she can do it again here. She is 5/1 on the morning line and will probably linger there. Others that I will record are 6 dividend summary, 9 tralee girl and 10 Summer Wirl. I am willing to throw the 12 tongue twister.
Betting Recommendation: Win Bet #5, Exacta key compartment 8 with 2,6,9,10
Race 9 The Personal Ensign
Personally, I just don’t think Thordedo Anna is the same horse that she was last year. Last year she almost felt in what was one of the most exciting races of the year. This year she had lost such an achievement in both the Azeri and the Apple Blossom, at Churchill Downs, but had an excuse because she was completely closed to enter the first turn and finished 7th, returns to another interest in Churchill Downs and beats a weak field. I’m against her again on Saturday. I think Leslie’s Rose is really in shape and that she had a great achievement in the Shuvee. I will bet her to win here in the hope that she can sit behind some horses and jump at the top of the piece.
Betting Recommendation: Win Bet #6, Exacta key box 6 with 1.3.4
Race 10 The H. Allen Jerskens
In my opinion, this is the race of the day and should be a nice one to look at. Many different ways to go in the race. Patch Adams will probably prefer this in this one when he won the Woody Stephens last in an impressive performance. I will personally look somewhere else, the best races of Patch Adam have come to the circuit and I personally hope that the fast track is a great equalizer and he takes a step back. I have a working theory about sprinters that are sent to Saratoga and run without work over the dirt or experience over the dirt and just not working on it. Captain Cook On 12/1 I noticed. His figures fit, first start with a trainer -upgrade. Will probably be a huge prize and he will get Ricardo Santana who drove this meeting out of this meeting. If Captain Cook can move forward, he can be dangerous here. Others who intrigued me and will use his 2 Midland -money, he has a race and several works on the Saratoga -waste, slightly raced and he can pop here. The 6 Smoks Wicked and 8 Madaket Road are two that I think they can also run large races here.
Betting Recommendation: Win Bet #7 Captain Cook, Exacta key compartment 7 with 2.4.6.8
Race 11 The Ballerina
The 7 Horse Scylla run well in the race after the race race and just didn’t get over the bump. You start asking yourself if the horse might not be a winner, you see it a lot with horses who are just comfortable behind others, Soldier Rising comes up in me. I am against her here, especially because she will probably be preferred or a second choice. The 5 Claret Beret jumped to me, her figures fit, she also fired bullets over the Saratoga waste. I think she is on a huge performance and Saffie has led well in recent weeks. The 9 Hope Road is an option, but will probably be preferred or a maximum of 3-1. She has never overflowed this dirt before and she will have to go there soon because she loves the front and will break from the road to the outside. With the amount of speed signed on Zeitlos, it becomes interesting because she is a horse that has a considerable late blow. The 2 BrightKork is unbeaten in Saratoga and it worked well. Can she reverse her shape here?
Betting Recommendation: Win Bet #5 Claret Baret, Exacta Key Box 5 with 2.6.9
Race 12 The Forego
One of my favorite hits from this year was Crazy Mason in the Carter in April. He destroyed the late kick if he can stay within reach of the field early. Recently he has received doubtful journeys that only parks him 12-15 from the back of the field and just leaves him behind with far too much work. The PACE scenario should play directly in its running style here, or at least I hope. He gets a jockey switch back to Manny Franco who drove him perfectly in that Carter victory. I will be purely based on Bookem ‘Danno on gut feeling, this horse has done nothing more than winning lately, now he will extend an extra half of Furlong. I will use the two Brad Cox horses, but with reluctance his horses have not recently walked well in the races. I am going to use Scotland that is 2 for 4 at Saratoga and makes his second start of his 5 -year season and can still have some improvement in his future.
Betting Recommendation: Win Bet #6 Crazy Mason, Exacta Key Box 6 with 1.2,7,8
