Trade talk: Why Ryan O’Reilly makes sense for the Canadiens

It’s no secret that the Montreal Canadiens are still looking for a true second-line center – and some around the league believe Ryan O’Reilly could be the answer. After comments he made including “only had one good year” and “can’t make a five-foot pass to save his life,” there is a feeling that O’Reilly may be getting frustrated in Nashville.

The Nashville Predators veteran is off to a start that has not lived up to his expectations. With six goals and twelve points in seventeen games, there is a reset in the organization. O’Reilly’s comments after Thursday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers suggested a lack of confidence. However, his experience and two-way play are still valuable, especially for a young Habs team that needs help and leadership in the middle.

At 34, O’Reilly is no longer the elite offensive threat he once was, but he still wins nearly 60 percent of his draws — something Montreal desperately lacks. Adding him could ease the workload for Nick Suzuki. The Canadiens were rumored to be interested in Nazem Kadri, but the Calgary Flames say he is unavailable. Brayden Schenn could be an option if the Blues choose to move on, but he is $2 million more expensive per season and for one extended season.

With two years left, O’Reilly is a perfect fit as a stopgap and mentor. The costs? Nick Lariviere of The Sick Podcast writes: “To get O’Reilly, the Canadiens could take advantage of Oliver Kapanen’s rising trade value from his early-season performance, or a prospect like Owen Beck, who is close to NHL ready, along with two second-round picks in the next two drafts. This may not seem like much, but given O’Reilly’s age and the potential struggles within the Predators organization, it could be enough to make it happen.”

There is no indication from the Predators that they are shopping O’Reilly. And while he doesn’t have trade protection, it’s said the Predators will treat him as if he does and keep him informed of everything they discuss. Still, it’s a move that could make sense for both sides — and one worth watching if Nashville’s struggles continue.
