Toyota UA80 transmission problems cause lawsuit

The eight-speed gearbox, torque converters and software from Lexus and Toyota are said to be defective.

– A lawsuit has been filed against the Toyota UA80 transmission after customers complained about problems with the eight-speed gearbox.

In addition to the Toyota UA80 transmission, the class action lawsuit alleges that the torque converters and software are also defective in these vehicles.

  • 2022-present Lexus NX 250

  • 2024-present Lexus TX 350

According to the lawsuit, the UA80’s transmission problems are caused by too much heat building up in the transmission. This causes the transmission fluid to burn, causing the transmission to wear out prematurely. Once the transmission fails, the vehicle will stall.

Software issues also reportedly cause premature upshifts of the transmission clutch and torque converter. The lawsuit claims this further wears out the UA80 components and causes overheating.

According to the transmission class action, customers may experience multiple symptoms related to the UA80 transmission issues.

“Both defects are inherently dangerous because a defective transmission can cause a vehicle to respond unintentionally, as a defective transmission may be unable to shift or remain in gear, cause slipping gears, cause fluid leaks, cause delayed shifts, cause missed shifts, cause delayed engagement and harsh shifting, cause burning odors and unusual noises, and cause the vehicle to lose power.”

The plaintiffs complain that none of this should happen because Toyota has known about the UA80’s transmission problems since August 2016.

The class action references numerous actions by Toyota regarding the alleged UA80 transmission problems, including technical service bulletins, technical tips and customer satisfaction programs. These would prove that Toyota knew about the transmission problems long ago.
