A Japanese tourist has died after falling from one of Rome’s most popular tourist attractions.

Local media have reported that the 69-year-old fell about seven meters to the ground from the outer wall of the Pantheon in the city center on Friday.

Newspaper the Republic said Emergency services and firefighters arrived on the scene after a passing priest saw him lying on the ground and alerted authorities.

The newspaper obtained CCTV footage from the Pantheon and cameras from a cosmetics store overlooking where the incident took place.

It said they showed the man alone on a parapet before he lost his balance and fell into the corridor of the Pantheon.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of death.

Rome has seen an increase in the number of tourists visiting Rome in recent years, especially since the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. Last year, more than 22 million people visited the iconic city.

The Pantheon is one of the main attractions. In 2019, it registered almost nine million visitors, making it the most visited Italian state museum site.

In 2023, tourists had to pay to enter the site, which was previously free to visit.
