Pat Perez never thought he would see another player do what Tiger Woods did.
Then came Scottie Scheffler.
“Tiger is two months older than me. I met him when we were eight years old. I played against him. I’ve played against this man all my life. I never thought in my lifetime that I would see a man who would play anywhere near – not the same game, of course – but be as dominant as him. I just didn’t think about it. I just didn’t think it would come,” Perez said. WAVES Substandard co-hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz.
Perez played against Woods for most of his professional career. He has seen the next generation, and the generation after that, arrive. According to him, there is one player who had a chance to come close to Tiger’s level, and it is not Scheffler. But it is the way Scheffler has risen to become the dominant force in golf – while maintaining an even keel – that has most impressed Perez.
“I still think Rory is as close to Tiger in terms of talent as I’ve ever seen,” Perez said. “I don’t think anyone will ever reach 82 wins [Scottie] is different. I don’t know what it is. I like the way he goes about his business. It’s just golf. Go home. Family. No flash. No nothing. He just does what he does and goes home. It’s almost like he doesn’t realize what he’s doing and how incredible it is.
“I mean, Tiger Hit is all over the map sometimes. He hit this wedge over a tree a foot in the dark. The theater he put on was incredible. Scottie does that, just in a different way. I just can’t believe he separated himself like that. When the guy saves it, you know he’s going to be there at the end.”
