Tottenham Hotspur technical director Johan Lange says the club has already drawn up plans for a busy summer transfer window.
Despite persistent injury problems, Spurs only added Conor Gallagher during the winter window, as well as youngsters James Wilson and Souza.
Lange has now explained why, while also raising expectations for significant moves ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Tottenham transfer plans for the summer window
Speak with Tottenham official websiteLange made it clear that the club sees the summer as the key period for squad building.
“In the summer market, eight or nine out of ten players change clubs,” says Lange. “So we enter the summer period with great ambitions to strengthen the team.
“We know there will be more movements, we know there will be more opportunities, so the plans are already in place.”
Lange confirmed that Tottenham already have a clear idea of both the positions and player profiles they want to target, suggesting that the preparatory work behind the scenes is well underway.
He doesn’t go into details, but you would have to assume that a goalkeeper, a full-back and a wide forward will be among the list of targets.
With Liverpool interested in Micky van de Ven and rumors swirling about Christian Romero’s future, Spurs could face a battle to retain key assets as well.
Why Tottenham had a quiet January transfer window
Tottenham’s lack of signings in January raised eyebrows, especially after injuries to Lucas Bergvall, Richarlison and Pedro Porro. Although serious, there is no expectation that there will be a season-ending event.
Thomas Frank has had a hard time in that area all season. Tottenham have been the Premier League team worst hit by injuries this season.
Lange admitted the club would have liked to do more business, but said the opportunities simply weren’t there.
“Could we have taken one or two more in January? We would have liked to do that, but it wasn’t possible,” he explained.
He pointed to team size limits and competition rules as key factors behind the decision to hold the fire.
Champions League registration and PSR explained
Lange emphasized that regulations played a major role in Tottenham’s approach, despite the club being in a relatively strong financial position.
“There are some restrictions on the number of players you can have in a squad to register them,” he said. “But even though our financial situation according to the rules is better than that of most clubs, and we have owners who are very willing to invest, it is important that we stick to those rules.”
The technical director emphasized that adhering to profit and sustainability rules meant Tottenham could not simply sign players for the sake of that goal.
“It’s important that we sign the right players. I think Thomas has also been very clear about the two players we wanted to bring in, but it wasn’t a lack of willingness from the club to make the investment to support the team,” he said.
Lange emphasized that Tottenham’s focus now is on finishing the season as strongly as possible.
“We are still in the Champions League. Of course we want to be higher in the Premier League,” he said.
At the same time, he acknowledged that recruiting planning doesn’t stop, even during the season.
“Myself and others will already have our eyes on the summer transfer period,” concluded Lange.
