Tottenham are in talks to sign Antonio Rudiger

Tottenham Hotspur have opened talks over the possible transfer of Real Madrid centre-back Antonio Rudiger to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next summer. Caught offside.

The German centre-back joined from Serie A side AS Roma in the summer of 2017, and the deal proved decisive as he played a key role in their FA Cup victory that season, while the Europa League, UEFA Champions League, Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup followed in subsequent seasons.

Remember new hair

Rudiger is nearing the end of his contract with Madrid, meaning he could secure a new club before the 2026/27 season. The Germany international has struggled to fully cement a regular starting role for the Spanish giants this season, increasing the chances of a summer exit.

Despite his limited role, the German, who turns 33 in March, has shown when he is fit and it is no surprise that several clubs, especially in the Premier League, are now vying for his signature.

According to Caught offsideTottenham are among the Premier League clubs showing interest in a summer escape for the Germany international.

Bargain

It appears Spurs are already accelerating their efforts to sign the 6ft 4in centre-back as the report adds that the North London club have opened talks over his potential move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next summer.

Although Chelsea have decided against a deal for their former key player, Tottenham will still have to battle London rivals West Ham United and Crystal Palace to sign Rudiger as both clubs have also held talks to sign him, while Paris Saint-Germain have also gauged their interest. Caught offside adds.

Signing Rudiger on a free transfer could be a smart addition for the Lilywhites, but it certainly shouldn’t be their replacement for Cristian Romero, who is expected to leave at the end of the season.

The Argentinian, despite his occasional brashness, is a leader on the pitch for Spurs, and at 27 he is currently in his prime.

Rudiger, on the other hand, is approaching the final phase of his career. While he is still capable when fit, Spurs will need to find a younger but equally capable option to lead their backline if Romero departs, with Rudiger only being used as cover and bringing a much-needed winning mentality to the dressing room.
