Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have expressed interest in signing Danish defensive midfielder Morten Frendrup from Genoa in 2026, according to reports Ekrem Konur.
The 24-year-old has been a revelation since moving to Italy from Danish side Brøndby IF in January 2022. His impressive performances in Genoa’s midfield have received widespread recognition, with the Dane improving steadily over the past two and a half years.
He has now made 137 appearances for the Italian side, contributing seven goals and six assists, with several Premier League clubs now monitoring his progress.
Despite Genoa having a terrible season this season – winless and with six defeats – he remains one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dismal season that saw head coach Patrice Vieira fired.
According to WomenTottenham and Liverpool have joined the race for Frendrup and have now formally expressed an interest in signing him in 2026.
The Denmark international has three years left on his contract at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, which should give Genoa some leverage on their valuation. Konur claims the Italian club will demand a fee of up to £26 million to let him leave, which Spurs and Reds are now keen on.
However, other clubs are keeping an eye on Frendrup’s performances, including Premier League duo Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, who are keeping a close eye on the defensive midfielder for a potential move when the window opens, the report shows.
Combative midfielder
Interestingly enough, Frendrup’s football inspiration is Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard – a connection that could give the Reds an advantage as the midfielder would undoubtedly jump at the chance to represent the same club as his boyhood idol.
His relentless energy and fierce competitiveness make him ideally suited to the demanding pace of the Premier League, which fits in seamlessly with Arne Slot’s powerful playing system at Anfield.
For Spurs, he would be a reliable midfielder who is comfortable on the ball and also combative in defensive plays in the middle of the park.
His stats, according to Photomobshowing that he has made 355 touches, won 45 duels, recovered 24 times and achieved a duel success rate of 58.1%, suggesting he fits the mold of a midfielder who would be reliable both in and out of possession for Thomas Frank.
With Genoa fighting to avoid relegation, a January exit appears unlikely, making a summer move a more realistic option for both clubs – and one that would secure an exceptional quality player at a bargain price.
