Grace Clinton marked her debut in Manchester City with a goal when the citizens ended the perfect start of Tottenham on their Women’s Super League campaign with a crushing 5-1 win.
Tottenham was one of the four teams that went with maximum points in competition day three, but they turned out not to be a party for City, who find their groove under Andree Jeglertz.
Aoba Fujino curled the burgers in a 23rd minute lead, collected the pass from Khadija Shaw in the area and found the top right corner, with Lize Head unable to keep the ball out.
City doubled their advantage six minutes before the break after the gaze of a corner of Vivianne Miedema from a corner, despite the best efforts of Cathinka Tandberg on the line.
But it became even better in front of Jeglertz four minutes later when the bent strike by the replacement Kerolin was friendly for Christmas Casparij, which went home from close range.
Shaw was given the opportunity to increase the lead of the city from the penalty spot after Fujino was polluted by Clare Hunt, but her efforts of 12 Yards was brilliantly saved by head.
However, it didn’t matter much for the visitors who took their fourth through Clinton, while she wiped the ball in the right corner after good work by Kerolin on the left.
Olivia Hold’s stunning 87th minute finish turned out to be a purely comfort, in which city replacement Laura Coombs completed the route in the fifth minute of the second half of the stop time.
In the other game on Friday, the London City Lionesses took their first WSL victory, with the brace of Isobel Goodwin who sealed a 2-1 victory over Everton in Goodison Park.
Goodwin opened the score in the 13th minute when she rattled the ball of the bar after Everton had not dealt with Half of Kosovare Asllani’s teasing corner kick supply.
De Leeuwessen then found two goals in the front when Goodwin Courtney Brosnan defeated from the box after he was found by the cutback of Nikita Parris.
But the WSL newcomers were forced to endure a nervy final for 20 minutes after Nicole Momiki had sent a penalty after she had entangled Jana Fernandez in the area.
The opening day of Everton Ornella Vignola wasted a glorious chance with a header, while the side of Jocelyn holds precheur to record their milestone triumph.
Data Debrief: Tottenham’s City Hoodoo continues
Tottenham wanted to win their first three games of a WSL season for the first time since 2021-22. However, they came across a city side that has often become in the top of the upper flight.
Indeed, Spurs has now only won one of their last 12 league matches against the citizens and lost the other 11. That only victory came back in September 2021, and they never looked like a disturbing city here.
The side of Jeglertz ended the game with a huge expected goals (XG) a total of 4.35 of their 24 shots, of which 10 were on goal, compared to Spurs’ 0.47 of their six attempts in the Net van Khiara Keating.
The result ensured that City has put together for the first time since March under Gareth Taylor Back-to-Back victories, while they also ensured that for the first time since 2015 they did not take 10+ WSL competitions without consecutive victories.
