The best players in the world converged on Hong Kong this week for the WTT Finals. The 16 players in the draw reflect the World Top 16, except that Darko Jorgic was unable to attend (replaced by world number 17 Simon Gauzy). World No. 1 Wang Chuqin was down 0-2 in his opening round match against Sora Matsushima, but he recovered to win 4-3 (11-9 in the final match). World No. 2 Lin Shidong had a tough first-round opponent in World No. 7 Liang Jingkun, but Shidong had no trouble at the table, winning the first game by a tight score of 15-13 and then leading the table for the 4-0 victory.

World number 3 Hugo Calderano was an early victim, losing 4-2 to Felix Lebrun. The only other upset in the first round came in the match between world numbers 12 and 13, with slightly lower-ranked Lin Yun-Ju beating Benedikt Duda 4–2.

The matches for the quarterfinals are Wang Chuqin vs. Alexis Lebrun, Truls Moregard vs. Lin Yun-Ju, Tomokazu Harimoto vs. Felix Lebrun and Lin Shidong vs. Xiang Peng. The remaining players are numbers 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11 and 13 in the world.

On the women’s side, they have already advanced to the semi-finals and only Chinese players remain. On Saturday, Sun Yingsha will face Kuai Man and in the other half of the draw it will be Wang Manyu against Chen Yi. Of these players, world number 9 Chen Yi is the only surprise – after beating Zhu Yuling in the opening round and then Chen Xingtong in the Quarters.

The action continues on Saturday with the Final on Sunday.
