Toowoomba Turf Club has scrapped the final race format for the King Of The Mountain, with the event run as a $150,000 Open Handicap over 1200 metres.

The King Of The Mountain previously operated under a slot race structure offering a prize pool of $750,000, with the race being held for the first time on New Year’s Eve in 2022.

The feature was later moved to the Toowoomba Show Holiday at the end of March, but the club has confirmed the slot concept will be scrapped for 2026, when the race will be held on Friday, March 27.

The meeting will also feature the Pat O’Shea Plate for two-year-olds, which will be run for $125,000, while the eight-race program will offer a total of more than $550,000 in prize money.

Meanwhile, the Weetwood Handicap will increase to $200,000 in 2026, up from $40,000, maintaining its status as Toowoomba’s premier race.

The Weetwood race day will take place at the end of September during Toowoomba’s Carnival of Flowers and will also include the Toowoomba Cup and Toowoomba Guineas.
