Fresh of a hard-earned victory over Adam Livingston on the edition of this week of Dana White’s Contender Series, Veteran wrestler-fighter Tommy Gantt stepped out of the cage with more than just a victory. He left with Momentum, Validation, a contract and an opportunity to show the UFC why his grind deserves a spotlight.
Gantt (11-0) needed less than three minutes to submit Livingston with a first round of Guillotine choke. After a tense face-off at weightings, he was relieved to leave the heated structure behind.
In the run -up to the fight, Livingston avoided the two spruce some time ago and possibly getting the best from Gantt.
“We sparkled before I had an amateur fight, I believe. I was in their gym and I went with all their best guys,” Gantt told Cagesside Press at his scrum after the fight.
“I took it down, but I mean, that was all I did at the time. We exchanged a bit on the feet and I think he might have caught me in an arm bar or something, but it was not like … it is sparing. A fight is a fight, sparring sparring and you see clearly what is happening.”
Gantt has delivered to work with Daniel Cormier in his new facility ‘The Academy’ in Gilroy, Ca. Working with the Hall of Famer and boys like Torrez Finney have sharpened his game considerably.
“I have made many improvements over time. I credit one of my coaches, he likes to be anonymous, but he just set me up with a phenomenal training. From beating to the wrestling,” he said.
When the fight was over, Gantt kept his eyes on Livingston while the decision was read. Livingston, who avoided his gaze, stared in the distance before he finally shook Gantt’s hand and left the Octagon.
“I think the Long Island Boys talk a little waste or whatever. Where I come from, we don’t really do that because we take a trash,” he said.
“If you do that, you are better ready to be on it.”
