Wrestling will always be part of my life, but after having done so long, it just started to feel a bit old. I was not so enthusiastic to compete,” Gantt told Mmasucka.
“The opportunity was for me to take on an amateur fight and I was curious what it would be like. I finally took the fight and performed well. I really enjoyed the entire process and I knew at the time that I was probably done with international struggling.”
Those who paved the path for Tommy Gantt
There are many coaches who pose a way for a successful hunter. Becoming an MMA hunter will only add to your list of supporters in the cage because of the required knowledge needed to compete in so many different facets of combat sports, such as your boxing, struggling, ground game, etc.
Competing at the highest levels of wrestling, earning a bronze medal on the USA World Cup, together with an all-American while struggling in the state of North Carolina, Tommy Gantt picked up a whole new list of important people to develop his sport.
“I have had many mentors in my time in struggling. As far as MMA is concerned, I have had a much shorter time compared to struggling. But I was lucky to let some really well -informed people help. Only a few of the names I call are Remy Fullwood“ Who is my boxing coach back in Raleigh. He started me from my first daily boxing and has been with me since. He taught me very good basic principles, “said Tommy Gantt.
Gantt continues: “My MMA coach back in Raleigh is a man named d’Uan Owens. D’Uan was a very talented hunter who would fight against everyone at any time, even in their hometown. D’Uan helped me a lot in sharing his technology and experience with me. Derek Brunson also has a positive influence on fighting. He encouraged me to argue years ago. I knew Derek long before I ever considered a fight and he tried to help me the way he could. ‘
“Since I moved to California to train full -time, I have been lucky to work with Bob Cook and Leandro Viera,” Tommy Gantt said. “Bob has coached quite a few world champions and most people do not know this, but he fought in the UFC himself a long time ago. To be able to work with a man who fought and coached at that level. I learn something new from him every day. Leandro Viera has been very helpful in learning BJJ and part of what he does in my wrestles.”
Free the way for others
Tommy Gantt, an ACC champion and all-American while he went to the NC State, joined the coaching staff in July 2023 to give back to his Alma-Mater, while he led young men while he was led.
“I am grateful for the time I had as both an athlete and a coach at NC State. I spent half of my life in that wrestling space as a athlete or a coach on this point,” Tommy Gantt said. “I just felt that, although I finished competitive wrestling, I still had the fire to test myself and I was unable to reach my ceiling in fighting while I kept struggling full -time.”
“I had a conversation with my former college coach who was also my boss at NC State, and he felt that I could beat someone in the world in MMA if I was in the right training situation. He encouraged me to fight everything and we both agree that it was the only way for me.
“Many of the boys I coached there in my two years, while an assistant still extends contact with me and asking me questions about struggling or asking me to work with them 1 on 1 in the low season. That means a lot for me that they have helped them to reach me for guidance,” Tommy Ganttt told Mmasucka.
So about the “no competition” that we mentioned …
As we mentioned in the introduction, there is a “no competition” blue about the otherwise perfect record of one of the rising stars of MMA. Why would you tell yourself what happened if the man himself has tackled the test perfectly in his own words …
“Kyle Wright was my third fight in three weeks. Kyle was big and relatively strong, but I was quite easy to struggle in the first rounds,” Tommy Gantt said. “I felt a bit of a break every time after each Takedown I landed. Finally with about a minute and 30 seconds in the second round I hit him with a single choice and I felt it stop as soon as he hit the mat. As soon as he was on the floor, he started to get the inside of my glove illegally and held for the sweet life.
The referee has done horrible work and said that I kneaded Wright illegally when he was on the floor, “he said.” When Kyle Wright realized that the referee shouted a mistake that did not happen, he flopped on the floor and the tears began to flow over his face and claimed that he couldn’t see it. I just started laughing. He deserves an Academy Award for his performance ”.
