Tom Jarvis scores career high in the world rankings – Table Tennis England

Tom Jarvis has become the top-ranked English player in the world after rising to number 61 in the world rankings in his career.

Jarvis jumped 11 places thanks to his run to the WTT Feeder Dusseldorf final last week, moving above Liam Pitchford, who is currently injured. Pitchford, who will have a protected world ranking in the top 100 when he returns from injury, drops to No. 80 for the time being.

Jarvis will also rise above Pitchford in the Table Tennis England rankings when they are updated next week.

Jarvis, 26, first entered the world’s top 100 in April 2023 and stayed on the fringes of that level for a few weeks before falling off the list.

However, it was after his sensational run in the last 16 of the World Championships in May this year that he cemented his place in the upper echelons of the World Championship, re-entering the top 100 at career-high number 78.

Since then, he has remained within the elite group and improved his career three more times, including this week.

However, Jarvis says that while the career highs – and impending move to England’s No.1 – are welcome, he is not motivated by rising up the rankings.

He said: “I was able to win quite a few tournaments this year and get a lot of wins in the same week, which reflects my ranking.

“But at the World Cup and last week’s tournament I wasn’t thinking about rankings, I was thinking about winning matches.

“I said to (performance development director) Gavin Evans last week that it’s time to win a Feeder. I had a good chance of being in the final in Portugal (last month) and reached the final in Dusseldorf. “It’s trying to get into a position to win by taking it one game at a time.

“You always want to be the best from your country – and there are some unfortunate circumstances with Pitch, which affect his ranking – but I would be more than happy if I was number 2, but had made that improvement myself and was still number 61 in the world.”
