Tom Aspinall claims that he never wanted to wait for Jones.
Aspinall was the interim -heavyweight champion for more than a year when he waited for Jones, and even had to defend his belt once. Yet the Jones fight never happened when ‘Bones’ retired and Aspinall was promoted to the undisputed champion.
Although Tom Aspinall now focuses on Ciryl Gane, the heavyweight champion admits that he never wanted to wait to fight Jones.
“I mean, that’s not entirely correct,” said Aspinall TNT Sports. “Now this is an exclusive that comes live on TNT sports. But there were many times that the UFC would tell me, anyway: ‘For example, the Jon Jones fight will happen in three months. So we would start the training camp, the intensity would go up and then the date would be moved.
“That happened three or four times and then he finally retired. So it was not as if I was literally waiting for the whole year. I thought the fight would come,” Aspinall added. “Everyone said:” Why are you waiting? “I wasn’t waiting. I was told that the fight took place, so there was nothing that I could really do.
It is an intriguing remark by Tom Aspinall, who makes it clear that he wanted to be active and did not care to fight Jones as many thought he did.
Tom Aspinall promises Ciryl Gane to get rid of the title photo
Aspinall will be included in the UFC 321 main event in Abu Dhabi on 25 October.
Aspinall enters the competition as a large gambling favorite. He is convinced that he will beat Gane and remove him from the title photo.
“Trust in trust is great”, Aspinall said on his YouTube channel. “I believe that, well, I am the best heavyweight in the world. But I want to show that I am the best heavyweight in the world. Ciryl Gane has lost two title shots and I want to give him his third title shot loss and remove him there.”
Aspinall comes from a knockout victory over Curtis Blaydes to defend the Interim Riem.
