That may not be the most comforting thing to read from your humble Wordle guide, but I’m normally pretty good at this game. Plus, I finally got the right answer. Now I can help you get there too. Read on for some tips and the answer below.

How to Solve Today’s Wordle
How to play Wordle
Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or less. After each guess, the game provides feedback to help you get closer to the answer:
- Vegetable: The letter is in the word and in the right place.
- Yellow: The letter is in the word, but in the wrong place.
- Gray: The letter is not in the word at all.
Use these clues to refine your guesses. Every day brings a new word, and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot, or even me, your humble narrator. See the rules for Competitive Wordle at the end of this post.

Wordle Bot Analysis
Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordle score with Wordle Bot here.
PRICE was a lousy opening gamble, leaving me with only gray boxes and 462 words. SALON has narrowed that down to 9, but I’ve made the following few guesses. Instead of MOLDY, Wordle Bot told me I should have guessed DEFOG, and that’s completely true. I guess I didn’t realize I had so few words left, and I didn’t realize how many words ended with LLY. At this point I came up with FOLLY, GOLLY, HOLLY, JOLLY and a few others and recommended FLOGS to weed some out, but it didn’t weed out enough. Then I tried JOLLY and then, foolishly, I thought for sure I only had HOLLY left. However, if the Wordle had been LOLLY, I would have lost this one completely. It still took me six tries! Yes!
Competitive Wordle Score

I get -2 for guessing six and -1 for losing against the Bot. I’m so glad this isn’t 2XP Friday! The Bot gets 1 point if he beats me, but loses this point if he guesses after five points. Our new totals for October are:
Erik: 18 points
Wordle bot: 5 points
How to Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent, you get 1 point. In case of a draw you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or play for a new score every day.
- Friday is 2XP, which means you double your points: positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day by day. Enjoy!
Contemporary Wordle Etymology
The word holly comes from Old English hollow (also spelled to retrieve or humble), meaning ‘holly tree’. It is probably derived from Proto-Germanic hulinaz or pushrelated to Old High German hooligan and Old Norse hulfrall referring to holly or similar evergreen shrubs. The deeper root may come from the Proto-Indo-European base kel- or kol- meaning ‘to prick’ or ‘to stick’, referring to the sharp leaves of the plant.
