The newest game in the NYT Games -suite is called PIPs. You can read all about it here. In short, it is a visual puzzle where you have to fill in a set of blank squares with a selection of dominoes. Each square has different circumstances and there is only one way to solve every puzzle.

I really enjoy this game and I thought I would add it to my rotation of Wordel, strands, mini -cross word and connection guides. Let’s dive into it right away!

How to play pips

In Pips you have a grid of multicolored boxes. Each colored area represents a different “condition” that you must reach. You have a select number of dominoes that you have to spend on filling in the grid. You must use any domino and reach any condition correctly to win. There are easy, medium and difficult levels.

Here is an example of difficult tier -pips:

As you can see, the schedule has a number of symbols and numbers with every color. On the far left, the three purple squares are not allowed to be equal to each other (hence the equal sign crossed). The two pink squares next to it must be the same as a total of 0. The zigzagging blue squares must all be the same. You can click on Domino’s to rotate them, and you have to do that, because they have to be turned to fit where they belong. Not shown on this grid are other conditions, such as “less than” or “more than”. It varies per grid. White spaces can have everything.

To win, you have to use all your Domino’s by filling in all the squares and ensuring that you match each condition.

Today’s Pips solution

I will just post the solution for simple and medium, then go on a little more details and depth. Spoilers forward.

Simple

Today’s simple pips are fairly simple, but a good warming for the next two.

Medium

This was a bit more difficult, but still fairly simple.

Difficult

Let’s get through the Difficult Step by step puzzle. The best way to start this is by making a few quick calculations. You need to know the quantity of each “pip”, especially if you have groups that must be equal, or some values that must be achieved.

First I am looking for a few courses that first defined values. In this puzzle there are two single boxes that are needed 1 PIP. There are only two dominos with 1 PIP, so we know that one of these will go in each of those boxes.

There are also in today’s puzzle Three groups (blue, pink and orange) of four that must all be equal. The two 1-Pip Domino’s have second values of 3 and 5. There are four 3s but only two 5s. This means that one of the 1 Pip Domino’s must go to one of those three groups, while the other cannot. There are 5 empty dominoesFour Domino’s with 3-Pip And Four Domino’s from 4-Pip Total, so we know that the three = groups must be of four: Blanco, 3 and 4, because only those figures are sufficient to meet these requirements.

Once you make this, you can start testing things. The 1/3 Domino goes in the subjects at the top left. There is also one blank/3 domino and one 3/4 domino. These can continue to fill the pink boxes, transfer to the left into the blue group and down in the orange group. We know that the 4 PIP must be in Orange based on the green group at the bottom. We then come up.

The last boxes that we have not discussed are the green ones that must be the same, so a 5-pip and a 6-pip must go next to each other. We don’t have 6/5 domino, so we know that two separate dominos must be used. We have one 6/4 DominoAn 5/1 Domino And one 5/Blank Domino. Because we have 5 blank Dominos -we do not all need to fill in the blue group. That means we are the 5/Blank Domino Together with the 6/4 Domino to fill in the green group and the 5/1 Domino To fill in the last single box.

At the moment we avoid all the difficult things and it is just a matter of placing the remaining dominos, such as so:

It can be a bit of a Mind-Bender to sort it out, but if you always start with the boxes must Have a specific value and work from there, it’s not that difficult. Of course you sometimes have to miss something or you have to undo what you have placed and start again, but that is the challenge that makes the game fun!
