Timberwolves’s plan for Johnny Juzang should be crystal clear

3 minutes, 18 seconds Read

The Minnesota Timberwolves signed Johnny Juzang last week for a training camp contract. Although it is just a training camp deal, Juzang has the ideal skills to make the last selection. Juzang’s mix of size (6-foot-7), shooting and shot creation make him well equipped for at least one of the last two selection spots of the wolves. He will probably not be a mainstay in the rotation of the wolves, but he could certainly receive some place minutes.

Juzang’s skills can benefit wolves

With the Utah Jazz last season, Juzang placed averages of 8.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists at 42.9/37.6/84.9 shooting splits. Undoubtedly, Juzang’s best feature is his light 3-point shooting. The UCLA product has shot 38.4 percent from outside the arc at 4.7 attempts in the past two seasons with Utah. In particular in the same piece, 58.8 percent of the field goals from Juzang was from 3-point country.

The Timberwolves are made in fifth place 3-Pointers. However, you can never have enough shooting in the modern NBA. As a result, this skill will always be the path from Juzang to minutes and at least keep it in an NBA selection. Having a wing with the possibility of touching outdoor shots will always be valuable. In Bench Line -ups the shooting of Juzang would be welcomed. But his shooting would enable him to fit nicely in line -ups next to Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle if necessary.

Juzang had a decorated university career at UCLA, marked by a Final Four Run 2021. He in particular spent two years playing the current Wolves wing Jaylen Clark. Despite the fact that he was unsigned in 2022 and did not play much as a rookie, Juzang managed to perform a rotation roll with jazz in the past two years.

However, shooting is not the only skill of Juzang. He is also a solid shot and Finisher who often attacks close -outs. Although he is in no way an elite shot, Juzang is at least solid in this regard. This also helps Juzang as a transitional player, where he recorded a very solid 1.14 points per possession. In general, Juzang’s mix of shooting and shot creation makes him someone who is worth keeping it around for the wolves.

Juzang is worth a selection despite his mistakes

It is worth recognizing that Juzang has his mistakes. In particular, he was statistically one of the worst defenders of the competition last season. Juzang ranked in the 1st percentile for estimated defensive plus-min. However, part of this can be attributed to playing on a reconstruction jazz team. Two other jazz players also appeared in the 1st percentile of this stat.

Playing for a competitive team with more talent around him can benefit Juzang. In addition, with a 6-foot-11-spane and only 24 years old, Juzang has the tools to improve defensively. Juzang will probably never be a big defender, but he could certainly be better than these Stat shows. He showed a number of solid defensive flashes despite the poor statistics.

Juzang is somewhat a score specialist and does not offer much as a playmaker. He would mainly be used as an off-ball shooter, but it is not to be denied that he could thrive in this role.

Regardless of his mistakes, Juzang’s scorentalalent should be too much to leave for the wolves. Minnesota has not yet signed another player for a training camp deal, but they will probably do that. Nevertheless, it will be a challenge to find a player who is as competent as Juzang. Ultimately, Juzang should have a clear path to earn a place in the last selection of the wolves.
