The Minnesota Timberwolves, Orlando Magic and Washington Wizards are reportedly among the teams monitoring Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland. According to Jake Weinbach’s tweet on Tuesday, December 16, these franchises could become active as the Cavaliers explore trade possibilities involving the two-time All-Star.
Garland, 25, is in the third year of his five-year, $197 million contract and has been a crucial player for the Cavaliers. This season he is averaging 26.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 9.0 assists over 25 games.
Cleveland currently has a 15-12 record going into the 2025-26 season, anchored by Garland alongside Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley. Mitchell contributes 30.7 points per game, while Mobley adds 19.1 points and 9.3 rebounds. Despite the team’s talent, the Cavaliers may consider leveraging Garland’s market value to strengthen their roster.
The Timberwolves, who are 17-9, have a backcourt led by Anthony Edwards and Mike Conley. Edwards is averaging 28.7 points per game with 4.9 rebounds, while Conley is contributing 10.3 points and 10.3 assists per game. Adding Garland could provide Minnesota with a second elite playmaker to complement their offensive structure.
Orlando has a 15-11 record and relies on Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero in the frontcourt and Desmond Bane at guard. Banchero is averaging 20.5 points and 7.9 rebounds, while Bane is adding 19.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Garland could take on the primary ball-handling duties and relieve the pressure on their young core.
The Wizards, who are struggling at 4-20, have a backcourt led by CJ McCollum and Tre Johnson. McCollum is posting 18.9 points per game and Khris Middleton is contributing 10.4 points and 4.2 rebounds. The addition of Garland would provide a proven All-Star presence on a team looking to rebuild and stabilize its offense.
