Timberwolves -Fans must pump the brakes on the replacement of Rudy Gobert

2 minutes, 58 seconds Read

When the Minnesota Timberwolves set Joan Beringer with the 17th General Pick in June, their plan was clear to find the ultimate successor to Rudy Gobert. Although the benefit of Beringer is huge, especially on the defense with a rare combination of rim protection and mobility, he is undoubtedly a project player who needs time to develop. Timberwolves fans must be absolutely enthusiastic about the benefit of Beringer, but they must also realize that it will take time for the 18-year-old.

Do not expect in his Rookie season that Beringer plays more than occasional spot minutes. Perhaps if injuries arise, he could play a few real minutes. However, it is clear that in his first season he will not be an aconsistent part of the Rotation of Minnesota. Do not be surprised if he is assigned to the Iowa G League team for part of the season. Beringer’s raw offensive skills and the fact that he started playing a patient approach at the age of 15.

The wolves are planning that Beringer is the successor of Gobert

Although there is nothing wrong with developing a young player, it is undoubtedly more difficult to do as a team with title ambitions. Gobert is 33 and has shown signs of decline in the attack. If he refuses further, the development of Beringer becomes even more important.

Gobert’s contract will be in 2028, which can indicate the desired timeline of the wolves for taking over Beringer as the starting center. Nevertheless, Beringer 22 will be 22 in November 2028, which means that it is unclear whether he will be prepared for this responsibility.

Of course, ideally, Beringer would be sufficiently polished after three seasons to play a starting role, and this is certainly possible. However, it is far from a guarantee, 22 years old is still young, especially for a project player like Beringer.

As mentioned earlier, Beringer will probably not get many minutes in his Rookie season. However, the wolves will have to find a way to work in the rotation in his second and certainly third season. This can mean some growing pains in the beginning, but it is the right step for the future of the team.

The advantage of Beringer is clear, but Wolves fans must be patient

On the other hand, Beringer is already a defender at NBA level and exhibited potential in Summer League, on average 2.5 blocks, including a game of six blocks in his debut. Defense will be the path of Beringer to minutes early, probably his business card during his career. Beringer’s talent for blocking shot, combined with his athletics and switability, gives him legitimate all-defensive benefits.

However, Beringer’s attack must catch up. Beringer plays a clear role as a screener and lob threat. He showed part of this advantage in Summer League. Nevertheless, Beringer must work on his decision -making and overall polish. He would currently offer minimal offensive value at NBA level. Of course there is enough time to improve for the 18-year-old French, and if Beringer’s attacking game is indeed developing, he could be a very impactful two-way player.

Ultimately, Beringer can very well be the center of the future of the wolves. However, Wolves fans must realize that he is a development player, and it can take years before he is ready for an important role.
