The Sweden Vooruit, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season, did not travel with the Newcastle team during their pre-season tour through Asia.
Liverpool has just signed Hugo Ekitike for £ 79 million, but are still interested in Isak and the latest developments open the door to a move to Anfield.
Arne Slot would like to strengthen his attacking options for the new season, with Ekitike and Florian Wirtz already brought in.
Here Standard Sport looks at how Isak could fit on Merseyside.
Isak and Ekitike play together
Liverpool is the team to beat next season with or without the addition of Isak.
So the thought of adding him to a front line that Al Salah, Wirtz and Ekitike contains is a frightening proposition and one that Arne Slot would not necessarily force to choose between his two new strikers.

Ekitike is a versatile and mobile attacker. An selfless player who can contribute in different phases of playing. His movement, whether it falls deep or pulls wide, can help create space for others, namely Isak.
Isak is a more natural goal scorer than Ekitike, whose 12 assists speaks last season with a player who is willing to create opportunities for his teammates.
There is no reason why they could not play two together, with Ekitike defenders from position to create space for Isak to meet.

Isak through the middle with Ekitike as a left wing
Playing Isak through the middle would be the most logical for Liverpool, who are used to playing with one striker, but that does not mean that Slot cannot start with Ekitike.
The versatility and pace of the Frenchman mean that although he is not naturally a broad player, he can operate from the left flank.

This allows Isak to play in a more natural role, as a central point for the Liverpool attack, while he still gives Ekitike for minutes.
When Isak arrives, Ekitike will have to accept that he is no longer the figurehead of the Liverpool team, and so he will have to do it with all the opportunities he gets.

Isak starts for Ekitike
Ekitike is a great promise, but was Liverpool to seal a movement for Isak, then it would be expected that Ekitike would have to work around the Swede.
It seems remarkable to even think, given the amount that Liverpool has paid for Ekitike, that he should act as an understudy. But with lock that prefer a 4-2-3-1 formation with a lonely striker that leads the line, the arrival of Isak, probably for a record British transfer compensation, could see Ekitike to the bank degraded.

Isak is used to operating alone and will undoubtedly thrive with the creative thrust of Wirtz and Mohammed Salah behind him.
Isak was by far the most consistent attacker of the Premier League last season, and he will enjoy the chance to spear the climb from Liverpool to the title.
