Three tips: Jets show resistance, but fall 4-3 against Stars

The Winnipeg Jets didn’t get the start they hoped for in their first game of a four-match homestand, falling 3-0 to the Dallas stars early in the second period. Mark Scheifele brought the Canada Life Center crowd to life by scoring his 15th and 16th of the season in the back half of the middle frame to make it a 3-2 game heading into the second intermission. Jason Robertson restored Dallas’ two-goal lead with his 19th on the power play, and Logan Stanley answered shortly after to push the lead back to one. But the comeback did not materialize, as Winnipeg dropped the fourth game in the last five, losing 4-3 in regulation.

Not starting on time

After Saturday’s tragic night in Edmonton, where the Jets gave up four goals in the first period, including two in the first five minutes, you would hope they would be ready. Instead, the same issues surfaced again.

Esa Lindell opened the scoring after just 44 seconds, firing a shot through traffic that neatly beat Eric Comrie for his fourth of the year.

Dallas had a 1-0 lead in the second, and just 1:16 into the frame Roope Hintz made it 2-0 on the power play. Just over a minute later, Alexander Petrovic put the Jets in an even deeper hole, giving the Stars a three-goal cushion as Winnipeg continued to struggle out of the gate.

Recoil

Despite the slow start, the Jets showed some adversity and came within one goal twice. Scheifele got Winnipeg on the board at 11:04 of the second when Kyle Connor fed him a one-timer from the left circle. Then, with 1:08 left in the period, he buried another one-timer from almost the same spot to make it 3-2.

Dallas extended the lead early in the third, but Stanley’s goal at 14:06 brought the Jets back within one. That was as close as they could get, though, as the Jets ran out of gas.

Special teams are struggling

For the sixth straight game, the Jets allowed a power-play goal, and they had four power plays of their own, including a crucial one with 2:30 left that could have tied the score. Winnipeg has now gone seven straight games without scoring on the man advantage.

“That’s something they are good at” Scheifele said. “That’s an opportunity where we should get one, or at least get some chances or get some chances. It sucked that we didn’t do that.”
The Jets continue their homestand on Thursday as the Boston Bruins make their solitary visit to Manitoba’s capital. Puck drop is at 7:00 PM CST on TSN3.
