Three tips: Jets are embarrassed by Sabers in 5-1 loss

The Winnipeg Jets played game No. 4 of their five-game road trip in Buffalo on Monday night hoping to carry over the momentum from Saturday’s win in Nashville, but that didn’t happen. Buffalo scored twice just 18 seconds apart three minutes into the game and led 3-0 after the first period, another defensive collapse by Winnipeg.

Kyle Connor scored the Jets’ lone goal, his 13th of the season. Eric Comrie made fourteen saves before being withdrawn after the opening period, and Thomas Milic stopped fifteen shots in the final two frames. Oh boy, there’s plenty of bad stuff to get into here.

Good start… until it wasn’t

The Jets looked really sharp through the first few shifts. The Adam Lowry-Nino Niederreiter-Alex Iafallo line set the tone early and put the body in the Sabels’ zone. But things went wrong when Dylan DeMelo took an unnecessary holding penalty just 1:31 into the game.

Buffalo capitalized on the power play with Jason Zucker scoring his seventh, and just 18 seconds later, brutal defensive coverage released Bowen Byram to cut down the left side and rip one past Comrie’s shoulder to make it 2-0.

That was two goals on three shots for Buffalo.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s disappointing.” DeMelo said. “You want to take that effort we had in Nashville, that style of play, into this one and for whatever reason we didn’t do that.”

The momentum didn’t last long

The Jets finally got on the board at 11:26 of the second when Connor redirected a Josh Morrissey one-timer from the point to make it 3-1. You’d think Winnipeg might be able to build on that.

But just over a minute later, Alex Tuch beat Milic to restore Buffalo’s three-goal lead to 4-1, and that was about it.

Lowry holds a postgame meeting

The Jets’ room remained closed longer than normal after the game. Head coach Scott Arniel told Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press that captain Adam Lowry was holding a team meeting.

Connor was asked what was said.

‘Everyone has to get a lot better’ Connor said. “Keep it at that.”
The road trip ends Wednesday in Montreal against the Canadians. Puck drop is at 6:30 PM CST on Sportsnet.
