Three takeaways: Jets end four-game winless skid in Music City

The Winnipeg Jets closed out the second half of their back-to-back in Nashville on Saturday night, looking to bounce back after being defeated 5-1 by the Carolina Hurricanesa loss that extended their skid to four games. This time they responded. Winnipeg broke the streak with a sharp 5-2 victory over the Predators. Gabriel Vilardi opened the scoring, Nino Niederreiter scored a pair of goals, Cole Perfetti ended his drought, Kyle Connor scored his twelfth and Eric Comrie stopped 20 shots.

Better start

In Carolina, the Jets started flat, going nearly eight minutes without a shot while being outshot 6-0. Saturday was a different story. Just 47 seconds later, Mark Scheifele’s initial chance was denied by Justus Annunen, but Vilardi cleared the rebound for his 11th of the season, finally snapping Winnipeg’s four-game streak of allowing the first goal.

Secondary score comes to life

With less than a minute left in the opening frame, Luke Schenn hit Nino Niederreiter with a stretch pass through the neutral zone. Niederreiter carried the puck into the Predators zone and beat Annunen’s blocker side to make it 2-0.

The goal also ended a wild drought: 311 minutes, 31 seconds between goals by a Jets forward who wasn’t on the top line. The previous one? Adam Lowry returns on November 18 against Columbus. Crazy.

‘It obviously feels very good to get a goal like that’ Niederreiter said. “It’s not easy to score goals, so it’s a great feeling when one comes in.”

Perfetti puts an end to his slump

Perfetti went into the night without a goal since November 15. That changed in the second period. He slipped into the slot and hammered home a one-timer from Vladislav Namestnikov to give Winnipeg a 3-0 lead with his second of the year.

Winnipeg continues its road trip Monday at Buffalo, first of two matchups with Sabres in a span of five days. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:30 PM CST on Amazon Prime.
