Gray’s best hope comes in Race Six, the Enjoy and Support Kidz Carts Racing At Rangiora Today Pace over 2600 meters (3:04pm), where junior driver Alana Cameron will take the ride on the Stay Hungry four-year-old gelding John Stewart ($2.80FF).
“He’s a nice horse. He did well after his last race where they got a New Zealand record on the grass,” Gray said.
Gray has won three from fifteen starts and is confident that much more can be expected from him in the future.
Gray has made a tactical change for today’s standing start order – placing John Stewart on the unruly – to get away from the tires safely.
“He’s probably the best horse I’ve put a bridle on. It’s going to be harder for him as he goes up the ranks, but I think he can handle it,” Gray said.
Cameron also takes the lead on Motor Mouth ($23.00FF) in Race 1, the Barnsy’s All Trade Services Mobile Pace over 1950 meters (12:15). He knocked on the door without breaking through all the way, but with a bit of luck in his running should make it to the finish. Getting back on the grass at Rangiora is also a big plus.
“The last time we were at Addington the track at Addington was too tough for him when he was moving up – so he’ll enjoy being back on the grass,” Gray said.
Stunned ($26.00FF) in Race 2, the Rangiora Hockey – Thanks for your help with CATR Trot over 2600 meters (12:40) will also be piloted by Cameron. The mare is making good progress and according to Gray, final starter Blair Orange was full of encouragement after the race in Addington last Wednesday.
“Stunned, she went well on Wednesday and Blair jumped off her and said she would pick one up soon. She did really well and was in the lead this morning,” Gray said.
