Three lessons from the Jets’ 3-2 loss to Utah

The Winnipeg Jets were hoping to end their three-match homestand with at least two wins, but a late goal from Dylan Guenther secured a 3–2 win for the Utah Mammoth on Sunday evening. Dylan DeMelo and Mark Scheifele scored for Winnipeg, while Josh Morrissey had two assists. Connor Hellebuyck made 29 saves in the loss.

Turnover turns out to be expensive

With the game tied at 2-2 late in the third period, the Mammoth found a way to steal two points. JJ Peterka forced a turnover in the Jets zone, and Logan Cooley fed Dylan Guenther in the slot, who beat Hellebuyck with high gloves for the game winner.

“I think it was kind of a back-and-forth game, pretty sloppy, but you’re in a 2-2 game late in the third and it’s just a weird series of events, a one-timer from a pretty dangerous guy in the slot,” Josh Morrissey said. “We really liked our first one, not our second one, and then the third one was up for grabs. They found a way to get it, and that was it.”

DeMelo scores first goal since January 20

After a scoreless first period, Dylan DeMelo opened the scoring just 45 seconds into the middle frame, firing a shot off the post and passing Vitek Vanecek for his first goal since Jan. 20.

This goal has cured all my problems 😩

Morrissey scores 300 career assists

Despite playing their third game in four nights, the Jets’ best defenseman showed no signs of fatigue. Morrissey recorded the primary assist on both Winnipeg goals and reached 300 career assists, becoming the first defenseman in franchise history to reach that milestone. He joins Blake Wheeler, Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor and Bryan Little as the only players in franchise history to reach the 300-assist mark.

Winnipeg now hits the road for one game as they head south to St. Paul, Minnesota, for a Central Division clash with the Wild on Tuesday evening. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM CDT on TSN3.
