Three central defenders paired, including Guehi’s teammate

Three central defenders paired, including Guehi’s teammate

Liverpool need defensive reinforcement, with just two fit centre-backs, and three players have had their names checked, including Marc Guehi’s team-mate.

For all of Liverpool’s spending in the summer, they need a new signing at centre-back and arguably depth in attack in January.

Antoine Semenyo is closing in on a move to Man City, but the MailLewis Steele of Lewis claims Liverpool are ‘potentially ready to hijack any deal’, although this has been dismissed elsewhere.

On the other side of the field, however, Steele mainly links Maxence Lacroix of Crystal Palace, Joel Ordonez of Club Brugge and Nathan Collins of Brentford to Liverpool.

And this isn’t the first time the trio has been linked together.

Liverpool’s defensive scouting: a quick look

• Defensive objectives: Maxence Lacroix, Joel Ordónez And Nathan Collins are name-checked while players Liverpool are following.

• Strategic depth: With just two fit centre-backs, the club is keeping an eye on profiles ranging from homegrown players to versatile youngsters.

• Guehi waits: Liverpool reportedly prefer to wait until the summer Marc Guehiwhich may necessitate an emergency addition in January.

Last summer, 2 of the 3 defenders were linked together

Reporting that Liverpool would “now prefer to wait until the summer” to sign Guehi, Steele continues to monitor the three defenders while underscoring the need for depth in January.

Lacroix, 25, has been ‘discussed’ by Liverpool in the past and has made 66 appearances alongside Guehi at Palace since joining the club from Wolfsburg in 2024.

The club were previously linked in late 2023 following Joel Matip’s ACL injury, but the right-sided centre-back would move to Selhurst Park for £18m the following summer.

Ordonez, meanwhile, is a player who Steele says Liverpool “have been keeping an eye on, especially before they signed Leoni”, with the 21-year-old having already amassed almost 150 appearances in the top two of Belgian football.

The young defender is already a key player for Brugge and can also play at right-back, a versatility that Liverpool have shown they need.

Collins will be a little better known to many as he plied his trade exclusively in England, starting at Stoke before stops at Burnley and Wolves before joining Brentford in 2023.

He is “discussed as a potential defensive reinforcement”, and the benefits are that the 24-year-old would qualify as a homegrown player in the Premier League.

Additionally, his 6-foot frame makes him naturally dominant in the air, which also saw him linked over the summer.

Liverpool scouts have apparently been monitoring the progress of all three defenders, but it is unlikely they will be the only centre-backs linked in the coming weeks.
