Thomas Frank greeted Mikkel Damsgaard, who has granted 10 assists in his first full season without an injury or illness since he came to the club, while Brentford chases a record eighth place
Brentford’s exciting front three can rave praise. But Thomas Frank believes that “instrumental” Mikkel Damsgaard has been the central gear for the indictment of his team for a record eighth place.
Only Mohamed Salah and Jacob Murphy have provided more assists this season than the Dane’s 10.
But the ball on a dish for Bryan Mbeumo, Yoane Wissa and Kevin Schade only tells a part of the story with Frank who is leaving Damsgaard to reach a level of physicality where he can finally treat the hardships of English football.
He was signed from Sampdoria in 2022, but struggled with illness and injury and the slim maker admitted earlier this season that he had to work very hard to get stronger. It finally pays off because Brentford also keeps an eye on record points.

“Damagaard is definitely an important reason,” Frank told Buren Fulham prior to today’s last home game. “The three front players, Bryan, Wissa and Kevin – they have been very good this season and all the praise for them, they deserve that.
“But I think he has been instrumental, a large part of our offensive success, but also the way he connects the game makes everything better.
“The big thing has been his condition, not only no injuries, but that he can play with a consistent intensity throughout the season. And I think he will come back even stronger next season because this has been his first full season for five years.”
No ground has seen more goals than the GTech this campaign, in which Frank said that some employees have started the ground to call the target technology. And of the 38 they scored at home, a certain step with Damsgaard stands out.
“They are not just his assists, they are his second assists or his third assists,” Frank adds. “One of my favorite goals this season is at home in Leicester, where Damsgaard got the ball, a perfect by Ball to Kevin Damage and he played it on Wissa, 1-0. He doesn’t get the assist but without the first pass it is never a goal.
“He is not the most pronounced or a player you notice. But if you look at what he is involved and how he lets the team tick, how he makes things happen, it’s fantastic. Give the ball to the best player, give it to Damsgaard, something will happen.”
Frank went to yesterday’s cup final with a friend of home who happens to be a Crystal Palace fan.
And while their seats were in a neutral zone, the Brentford -Baas admits that it was unusual, knowing that his team Manchester City needed to win if they would have a chance to qualify for Europe for the first time.
Yet, as always, Frank would rather focus on the process than on the result.
“We always want to focus as high as possible,” he says. “Eighth is the highest possible, so we try to go for that. The most important power of us is a laser focus on the next game, then the next game and are not taken away too much.
“Our highest points totally would be fun, but we have to win the remaining two. If we lose the next, we can’t talk about it. We need laser focus.”
