Welcome to playing Smart, a regular game allowance column with golf.com that will help you become a smarter, better golfer.

Hip Turn is a crucial part for generating strength in your golf swing. If you are limited in turn up, it becomes much more difficult to get the length needed to generate the speed of the club head.

Getting an effective hip twist is easier for some golfers than others. If you are young and flexible, producing a huge turn is relatively easy. But as you get older and your body does not move so well, it becomes increasingly difficult.

If you are one of those aging golfers (or you have an injury that occurs a good turn), there is still hope. With one simple set -up Tweak, you can be as you have done in your younger years and the fairway on the fairway screens like you did in your Prime.

Instructor Kelan McDonagh explains how in the video below.

1 tweak for more hip turn

Limited hipotation results in lower club head speeds and shorter discs. However, if you can return just a little more, you can solve that problem immediately. All you have to do is make a simple adjustment in your setup.

“If [GOLF Top 100 Teacher] Mike Adams always says, it’s in the setup about how we are going to swing, “says McDonagh.” There are certain things that we can do with a player attitude in how we orient their feet to generate a larger turn in the backswing. “

To get a baseline for the amount you go back, take an alignment stick or golf club and keep it in your waist. Then make a turn to the top and notice how far you can turn.

Take your posture again, but this time your trail foot drops back and let your path flare up a bit. Then take the same turn to the top of the backswing.

“What I generally see with players who have tight hips, especially in the pad side, when they come back, they will stop and then lift,” says McDonagh. “When we drop and flare up the right foot, the hip continues to rotate and the club can stay more on the plane.”

If you are struggling someone to get as much hip twist as you need, give this adjustment a chance. It should help you make a fuller twist and bring you into a much better position to generate strength.
