If your irons lack compression, the problem may have less to do with your swing mechanics and more to do with the way you use the ground. Specifically, how the pressure moves through your foot.
Like Dr. As Alison Curdt, a GOLF Top 100 teacher, explains in a recent Instagram post, many amateurs make the crucial mistake of pushing from their trail toe during the downswing, which sends power the wrong way and weakens impact.
“Pushing from the trail toe shifts your weight incorrectly, misaligning lateral forces and reducing compression at impact,” says Curdt.
Instead, players must learn to properly transfer pressure through their feet so that the body moves more efficiently and the club reaches impact with more speed and stability. The secret to unlocking this power: ‘banking’ your trail foot.
Tilting the drag foot describes how pressure is loaded and then released through the foot as the swing changes direction. As Curdt explains, banking is not something golfers actively do during the backswing; it is a response that emerges when the swing changes direction.
During the backswing, Curdt says maintaining pressure along the inside of the trail foot is critical. This sets the stage for good banking as you head into the recession.
“Using the inside part of the foot, push from the entire inside of that foot sideways toward the target,” she explains.
The key is to engage the entire foot, from toe to heel, to avoid twisting or rolling on the toes. If done correctly, this should help you shift your weight efficiently and increase compression at impact.
Train the feeling
If you want to practice this feeling and master this key movement, a simple training aid can be a valuable tool. In the video above, Curdt uses a plank she made herself by attaching a dowel to the center of a plank slightly larger than her foot. If you don’t want to make it yourself, there are plenty of ready-made training aids – like those shown below – that work just as well.
Force Board Pro
The Force Board Pro is a double-sided adaptive training platform. Improve balance and stability and increase ground reaction forces with the Force Board platform and attachments. Use the Force Board Pro with the SuperSpeed app for a guided training experience for faster swing speeds and longer drives. What’s in the box? Force Board Platform (30″L x 18″W x 0.5″D) Green Circle Mount x 2 Gray Oval Mount x 2 Red Three Circle x 2 Yellow Pin x 8 Force Board Carrying Bag The Force Board platform is large enough to accommodate all clubs including the width of the driver stand and has a minimum height off the ground so you can easily hit balls off it. *Patent pending Includes lifetime access to all Level 1 protocols in the SuperSpeed app for iOS and Android. Upgrade to Premium for even more protocols and receive a customized training program!

“If you bank well, it should feel like the board is almost pushing into the ground,” says Curdt, “which should propel your body forward, allowing you to get a good weight shift and compress the golf ball.”
Once you can perform the movement correctly with practice swings, introduce a golf ball. Start slow and as your confidence grows, gradually progress to full speed shooting.
