Bethpage, NY – Everyone is talking about the New Yorkers. New Yorkers will be the 15th club for the American team – or will they be the 13th man of the team? Is that a better analogy? Luke Donald and Keegan Bradley spoke about New Yorkers during the opening ceremony and their golf canal surrogates, Paul McGinley and Brandel Chamblee did that too.
Let’s bring in Alicia Keys, from the choir of Jay-Z’s epic ‘Empire State of Mind’, because she touches every note on this broad subject:
Now you are in New York:
These streets will
Let you feel brand new.
Brights -Lights will
Inspire.
Let’s hear it
New York, New York, New York.
In the center of Bethpage, a mile or so from the golf course, on an old shot-and-a-bear stop called Susan’s, hard through a Long Island Rail Road Track, six real New Yorkers were cold on Wednesday. Late afternoon, early autumn. This is a scoop, a ryder cup at Bethpage Black, but it can’t be careful not to care, not here at Susan on Wednesday. New York is the funnel with a broad mouth of American experience. It is granting new. Old Susan’s is part of the whole thing. Eighty different countries fly to JFK. One hundred and sixty languages are only spoken in Queens. Susan is an Irish bar who is owned by a man named Vinny from Brooklyn with a bar girl from Spain named Maria and posters of big black boxers on his walls. The softball team of the bar is called the Sigourney Weavers.
Susan advertises-in paint, on an outside wall-75 cent. They are $ 3 when you come in, but nobody cares at Susan’s. Nobody in Susan’s cares about the Ralph Lauren blazers who wore the Americans during the opening ceremony across the street, or why Rory McIlroy was so grumpy, in those weeks after the masters. He won. Right? She Doing Give around the Mets. The Mets stick to October dreams due to a wire. Susan’s is a baseball and football bar, and what else comes up.
“You can’t always get what you want” was playing. There is a PayPhone on a wall that doesn’t work. Maria likes to bring you peanuts and pretzels. The different TVs there attack you with new and more new ones: two boats collided in the Atlantic Ocean for Fire Island; The Yankees play play -off baseball in October for the 60th time; Zensky spoke in the United Nations, at the general meeting.
The six customers in Susan come together in two groups of three. There is three of younger boys, in t-shirts and baseball caps, bustling on their upper spines, sitting at the front of the bar, near the dartboard and the entrance. There is another trio of older boys, in t-shirts but hatless, sitting to the back of the bar, near the pool table and the toilets.
The older boys are talking about the Yankees and watch the boot accident and hear about the recent holiday of Maria, a Mediterranean cruise. (She thought it was great. She didn’t come to Spain.) The younger boys had been to the golf course earlier in the day. Maria says she likes Jon Rahm, but otherwise it is not interested in Golf. She likes European football and American football. One of the young boys, after consulting his mobile phone, notes that you can buy a ticket for the Thursday practice round for $ 158, the price drops as the weather forecast, for a soaked rain, becomes more confident.
“How much for Friday?” One of the young customers asks.
Friday is the first day of this 45th Ryder Cup.
“Friday? Friday is $ 1,600.”
“Yes,” says the first man. “Can your credit card treat that?”

The beer is cold and the peanuts salt. Nobody hurried to do anything else. A train whistles past, with a frightening speed for such a densely populated area.
The Long Island Rail Road and the Long Island Expressway, together with Montauk Highway and Sunrise Highway, are the most important East-West-Oudsaders in Long Island. Every random number of Parkways and Druisways brings you to the north and south. There is Bethpage State Parkway, Sunken Meadow Parkway, the Jones Beach Causeway, many others. Sonny Corleone was ambushed in a toll boat on the Jones Beach Causeway. Everyone knows who did it: Barzini Family Trigger Men, with the support of the Tattaglia family. The Godfather is written for New Yorkers.
Bethpage State Park is located on the provinces of Nassau and Suffolk. Many long islanders come from families who went to the east, leaving Brooklyn and Queens after the Second World War. Irish long islanders tend to root for the Mets, because Brooklyn was so Irish and the Mets were worn the departure of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Italian long islanders tend to root for the Yankees, from the old faithfulness to Joe Dimaggio. Jay-Z wears a Yankees-Pet in ‘Empire State of Mind’ and in real life.
Everyone on Long Island has golf in Golf. Almost everyone. There are dozens of driving ranges and golf courses on Long Island, public jobs, jobs of provinces, state courses, village courts, executive jobs, pitch-and-puts, mini-golf courses with carvel nearby. Bethpage State Park has five courses, each identified by a color. Only Masochists play the Black Course and this week 24 Ryder Cuppers.
Bethpage has an Italian restaurant and an Italian Deli and various Irish pubs in his business district. It has an Indian restaurant, a Chinese restaurant, a Thai restaurant, a seafood restaurant, a Greek restaurant, plus some others. It has dinners and bagel shops. It has everything as New York has everything. This week it has the Ryder Cup. At Susan, coming on Friday and the weekend, one of the TVs there it will probably have.
