This day in Braves History: Warren Spahn records his ninth 20-win season

1958 – Warren Spahn becomes the first Lefty to have nine career 20 winsezoens with an 8-2 victory over St. Louis. Eddie Plank and Lefty Grove each won eight times 20 games.

1959 -Red Schoendienst returns for the first time to the Braves -Line -Up since he was diagnosed with tuberculosis last November.

2015 – The Mets win their seventh upright and the Braves act their 12th consecutive loss at home with a 10-7 victory. Daniel Murphy hits a three-run home run by Ryan Kelly in the ninth and then scores three more in the 10th to win 10-7. New York has been taking on his first four-game Sweep from Atlanta since 1989 and it is the first time that the Braves have lost 12-Straight at home since 1931.

1909-Ty Cobb lowers the title of the American League Home Run with a Homer within the park against the browns. Cobb has nine homers in the season and they are all inside the park.

1927 – Babe Ruth touches Homers no. 51 and 52 while the Yankees wipe a double header from Cleveland and conquer the pennant of the American League with a record of 98-41.

1931 player/manager Rogers Hornby connects to a 11th inning pinch hit Grand Slam to give the Cubs an 11-7 victory over the Braves.

1936 – The Cardinals and the Giants split a double header on the polo rounds for a crowd of 64,417, the largest audience in the history of the National League.

1946-Ted Williams touches the only home run of the parking lot of his career to help the Red Sox to beat Cleveland 1-0 that also holds the pennant of the American League for Boston.

1965 -Willie Mays becomes the fifth player in the Major League history with 500 career home runs in a 5-1 win over the Astros at The Astrodome.

1971 – Frank Robinson Homde in both games of a Double Header split with Detroit to become the 11th member of the 500 Home Run Club.

1972-Johnny Bench continued a scorching September with a two-run shot in the 10th inning to give the Reds an 8-6 victory over the Braves. The day before, Bench hit a Grand Slam in a 7-5 over Atlanta.

1983 – Then Quisenberry breaks the single season of John Hiller saves the record by picking up his 39th when he closes a 4-3 victory over the Angels.

2011 – Mariano Rivera becomes the second pitcher with 600 Saves when he throws a scoreless ninth in a 3-2 victory over Seattle.
