The air fryer flounder consists of seasoned fillets that are air fried until golden brown and crispy on the outside, with soft, flaky flesh in the center. It’s ready in under 8 minutes and is a quick, protein-packed weeknight dinner.

My favorite air fryer fish

Arman Liew

I cook a lot of white fish in the air fryer and lately flounder has been on repeat.

It is a mild, delicate fish that cooks quickly and takes on whatever spices you cover it with. Inspired by mine tilapia from the air fryer And halibutI keep it simple with spices from the pantry and a touch of oil. The fish will be perfectly flaky yet soft and tender in the center. Here’s why I love this recipe:

  • Quick and easy. From preparation to plate, it cooks in just seven minutes.
  • Works with frozen fillets. I’ve tested this both ways, and frozen flounder cooks beautifully with just a few extra minutes.
  • Perfect for picky eaters. It’s super mild and never tastes “fishy,” making it ideal for picky fish eaters.

Main ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need, along with my kitchen notes. Full measurements are in the recipe card below.

  • Bone. Flounder are easy to find all year round. Most supermarkets stock skinless fillets in the seafood bowl, and many stores also stock frozen portions.
  • Spices. I use kosher salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and chili flakes (optional).
  • Olive oil. A little fat helps the herbs stick to the fish and also makes the edges crispier.

How to cook flounder in the air fryer

Start by seasoning the fish. Pat the fillets dry, brush them with olive oil and sprinkle them on both sides with the herbs.

Recipe tips from Arman

  • Adjust the cooking time. I have found that flounder fillets can vary quite a bit in thickness, so start checking at 6 minutes and adjust as necessary. Use a meat thermometer to check doneness and make sure it reaches 145°F.
  • Don’t make it too busy. Bone air frying works best when there is enough room to circulate around each fillet. My Philips XXL and Cosori models fit four fillets comfortably. If yours are smaller, air fry them in batches.
  • Start with dry fillets. Pat the fish completely dry before seasoning. Excess moisture can cause the air fryer to steam the fish instead of properly browning it.

How to store leftovers

The remaining air-fried flounder remains in the pan refrigeratorcovered, for up to three days. To warm upThen put it back in the air fryer at 350°F for 2 to 3 minutes, or heat it in a nonstick skillet over medium heat until heated through.

  • Preheat air fryer to 375°F.

  • Pat the flounder fillets dry with paper towels. Rub the olive oil over each fillet. In a small bowl, combine the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper. Sprinkle the herbs on both sides of the fish.

  • Grease the air fryer basket or line it with baking paper. Place the raw seasoned flounder fillets in the air fryer. Air fry the fish for 6 minutes, or until the fish flakes easily with a fork or until it reaches an internal temperature of 145°F in the thickest part.

  • Remove the flounder from the air fryer, squeeze the lemon juice over it and serve immediately.

  • Frozen bone: Thaw overnight in the refrigerator or air fry from frozen. If frozen, add an additional 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Leftovers: Store covered in the refrigerator for 3 days.
