Just before the October international break, Senne Lammens got his chance between the sticks, and oh boy, did he impress.

Lammens was asked to play starting against a Sunderland team that was enjoying it best start to a league campaign from every promoted team since 2013, and he executed them with ease.

While his saves were the most impactful (three out of three shots were faced), it was his commanding presence that really stood out.

With calm and composure he gave United’s defense the assurance they had been missing, confidently plucking everything from the air.

A stark contrast to the shaky goalkeeping United fans have had to endure.

While it remains unclear whether he will start against Liverpool at Anfield when United return to action this weekend, many will wonder why he wouldn’t.

Seeing him shine against Sunderland, keeping a clean sheet and walking away as man of the match, it would be mind-boggling to see him on the bench for Altay Bayindir.

Bayindir, who not only has one of the worst save percentages among goalkeepers who have started the first six league games, but has also scored 11 goals.

Voice of confidence

Lammens deserved his shot in goal; his brilliance during training had already been well emphasized.

But he needs the chance to show what he’s all about with a consistent run, starting against Liverpool. Or at least, that’s what his national team mentor Thibaut Courtois believes.

“The first game was a taste of what United will get,” Real Madrid goalkeeper Courtois told the club Irish mirror.

“He’s a tall man, he’s not afraid to get crosses, and he’s a kid with personality.

“I’m sure he can do well. He has a tough game this weekend, so I hope if he plays, things will go well for him. All the best to him.”

If United want to leave Merseyside with something, they can’t afford to go there with goals leaking, and it’s clear which goalkeeper has done that.

Against Sunderland, Lammens showed that he means business. He deserves to start.

Perfect stage to announce yourself

As highly regarded as Lammens is at Carrington, with Ruben Amorim seeing him as Courtois 2.0, he will only reach his ceiling if he is tested against the best.

Should the young goalkeeper impress against the Reds, there may be no way back. Such a match could announce him to the world and lay the perfect foundation for a promising United career.
