‘They can still do whatever it takes’ – New Zealand legend backs Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli for 2027 ODI World Cup

‘They can still do whatever it takes’ – New Zealand legend backs Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli for 2027 ODI World Cup

Former New Zealand cricketer Tim Southee believes the Indian management should stick with Rohit Sharma Virat Kohli based on their current form. Rohit and Kohli, who have already retired from T20Is and Test cricket, are currently playing in the ODI series against South Africa.

Highlighting the current form of the senior duo, Southee stated that they prove that age is indeed just a number. He also felt that the decision to participate in the 2027 World Cup and beyond should be left to Rohit and Virat.

“Kohli is perhaps the best one-day batsman ever and if he is still performing, why not? Rohit also scored a hundred in the Australia Series a few days ago, so they are still performing. As long as they contribute to the side, I believe age is just a number,” said Tim Southee, as quoted by India Today.

“I think it’s their decision. If they feel they can still do whatever it takes to play at the highest level, then why not. Like I said, you have Virat Kohli, who is arguably the best one-day batsman to ever play the game, and if he is available for the one-day World Cup, then I imagine the team wants him to play,” he added.

Despite this, Rohit won the Player of the Series award in Australia India losing the three-match series 2-1n. On the other hand, Kohli has had sublime touch against South Africa. He will feature in the deciding match on December 6 after back-to-back centuries in Ranchi (first ODI) and Raipur (second ODI).

The two will be seen in Men in Blue’s three-match ODI series against New Zealand in January next year. The 50-over segment of the white-ball series begins on January 11. The three matches will be played in Vadodara, Rajkot and Indore.
