Australia has returned two illegally exported archaeological objects to Ukraine, while it renews the support for the war torn by war in the midst of peace talks.
Art Minister Tony Burke formally gave the items back to the ambassador of Ukraine in Australia Vasyl Myroshnychenko during a concert in Sydney on the occasion of the Independence Day of Ukraine.
The items are an iron arrow point from the 12th or 13th century and a pendant from the third millennium BC. That was probably a traditional decoration in the old Yamnaya culture.
At the end of 2023 they were traded illegally to Australia and intercepted and seized on arrival in Sydney.

Archaeological objects are vulnerable in times of armed conflict, with the war between Ukraine and Russia dragging on for three and a half years.

“The return of these items reflects the constant dedication of Australia to combat illegal trade in cultural heritage in all countries, in particular those who suffer the hardships of war,” said Burke.

“These objects are part of the history and heritage of the people of Ukraine, which must be kept for future generations.”
Ukraine declared independence on 24 August 1991 after almost 70 years under the control of Moscow.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese used the moment to renew Australia for Ukraine and multilateral efforts to help resist Russian aggression.

He expressed admiration for the “extraordinary courage” of his people and said that the country stood with everyone in Australia with Ukrainian heritage.
“All Australians share the hope and expectation of the Ukrainian people that will prevail from victory and justice,” said Albanese in a statement on Sunday.
“May the Spirit of Independence Day maintain our faith in a future of just and lasting peace.

“Slava Ukraine!”

The safety of Ukraine was the center of the meeting, after Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a peace agreement in Alaska.
Albanian was part of a meeting of the “Coalition of the Willing”, convened by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron.
The prime minister said that Australia would consider requests to participate in a peace force, in which opposition leader Sussan Ley indicates that the coalition is now open to the idea.
