These are your favorite German cars – Jalopnik

The first car ever made was German-de Benz Patent engine car from 1885 and In the following 140 years, German companies made countless incredible cars. Earlier this week I asked our readers to tell me about their favorite German cars, and you all delivered. My choice was the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR, one of the coolest and best-looking supercars ever made that was born of homologation requirements in the FIA GT1 class. It could also be seen in “Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2”, one of my favorite racing games of all time.

Some of you also said that you would have chosen the CLK GTR because you have taste. But there were all kinds of correct answers here that represent a wide range of years, brands, body styles and price points. As usual, I chose my favorite answers to the couple, so don’t be angry that the Carrera GT is not here. Keep reading to see what German cars chose the Jalopnik -public as their favorites, and if you have missed the first question, you can also tell me your favorites in the comments.

Mercedes-Benz 190E

This is really difficult … the two I have driven and have a preference for the CLK63 AMG Black series, and the 190E 2.3-16V Cosworth.

The CLK63 is just so cool. Large, wide, targeted, a large engine, and you want to kill you when you take the traction control. It is a monster and just something that you could not get away with building today. With all that it is so under the radar that unless you know it, it just looks a bit like some mid-2000s Mercedes, you can’t find out what’s going on. It is on my list to possess earlier than later.

Polar opposite as the 190th 2.3-16V. Yes, it is not the 2.5 that the Euro market has received, or even the EVO that is just a car that I like to look at rigid in the dark when no one looks, but that we don’t have the 2.3 at all is quite cool. Light, agile, a great homologation special with a real cool story too. The car is not a couple sample, but likes to live above 3K RPM and will cruise all day at 100 mph cruising without complaints. Owned, thought it was great and wants it back.

I will have to go with the 190 E EVO2. Leave it to Mercedes to make a Mitsubishi Evo for the executive business class. It is a worthy boy’s racer and I miss it when Mercedes did things like this. The modern cars are fast and wear part of the obstinacy, but not as special as some of these once in your life.

So many things I could choose from, Buy My Heart says it is the 16V Mercedes-Benz 190 E. EVO II, is the Dream-Car Spec, but I would even take normal production 2.3 or 2.5. Classy, comfortable, usable, attractive Go-Fast sedan.

The EVO II is clearly the ultimate 190th, but they are all fantastic.

Borgward Isabella

Instead of posting a favorite Porsche, an off-beat-German car will post …. a Borgward Isabella.

Submitted by: not me

Borgwards has a really excellent design flourishing and also great names.

BMW Z8

This is very easy. But that is mainly because my list of favorite cars of all time might have 2 or 3 Germans. The person I like best is by far the BMW Z8. Before my eyes it is the most beautiful car that BMW has ever produced. As a homage car they did a great job by capturing what made the 507 cool and improved it in almost all ways. It is a roadster with the E39 M5 V8 under hood and perfect proportions. What’s not fun?

I just drove behind one of these last night! Really one of the most beautiful cars of all time.

Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing

Probably the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing. I don’t care about the performance or that. It’s just pure art, and I say that if someone really doesn’t care much about Mercedes.

I actually had to sit in a competition d’Elegance about 10 years ago. Probably the most expensive place I’ve ever set.

This gets my voice. It is a beautiful car in itself, and it is perhaps the only car that has done doors with channels.

Apologies not for his performance! It was the fastest production car in the world when it debuted: 155 MPH in 1954. Oh, and there is the “pure art” thing you mentioned. I didn’t agree with that anymore!

Although I haven’t driven a gullwing yet, I drove a 300SL Roadster, and I am happy to be able to report that it was even more incredible than you would hope.

Audi 5000

Audi 5000 quattro with a manual transmission. Damn, I wish I hadn’t sold mine.

84 Audi 5000 Wagon. Had one for my first car. It was wonderful to look at. It was a complete nightmare when it came to get stuck. However, it was my first car and that makes the memories even better …

Maybe my favorite era from Audi Design.

Volkswagen R32

2004 Vw .: R32. Accessible, attractive, acoustically amazing, AWD, alliterative and A-pragmatic.

The MKV versions never came to the state with the right amount of pedals, and the later versions with the 2.0l turbos, while still great cars (I love my mkvii golf r) do not seem to have the same presence.

There are more flashy examples of German technical bravery there are, but that car will always have my heart.

How can’t you like a hot hatch with four -wheel drive? (Although I prefer the fifth gene model.)

BMW M1

So many beautiful cars to choose from!

But in the end it must be the beautiful BMW M1.

Peak “Money No Object” Choice: BMW M1. Was previously available and usable; BMW E30 M3. Actually real possible; A4 Jetta VR6 (as long as someone else pays to keep the electrical system functional).

M1 by far.

I never get tired of seeing it.

Hoffmann

The Hoffmann – I am only thinking of bringing a smile to my face. All VWs or MB or BMW Everything that everyone is talked about is how they have built it for X-number of years, it does 0-60 in y seconds, it was the fastest around a stupid track and leaves no room for wonder, but the Hoffmann makes your imagination free to ask why almost every component and design decision.

Now we are talking.

Wiesmann

Absolute favorite

Submitted by: Charlie Powell

I have always loved this and Wiesmann has one of the best automotive logos ever.

Volkswagen Beetle

For me it is the VW beetle. It is the first car I have ever had, but more importantly, it taught me so much about how cars actually worked. I had driven a few years when I received a 1965 bug, but I didn’t know much more than where I had to fill those cars with gas. The beetle was such a basic car that it invited the owner to get hand. I changed the oil, rebuilt the carburetor, put a brake work, bowed the hood back into place and added a homemade bumper after I came into a small crash. I would not have dreamed of doing one of those things until I got that VW.

Edit: I forgot to mention that it was the car I learned to drive! It was remarkably forgiving for a beginner who had never seen a third pedal.

I don’t trust anyone who hates the beetle.

BMW Isetta

The BMW Isetta, because they are just so strange. How cannot you like a 3-wheeled motor car car that you should open the front to go into?

Submitted by: Adam Minter

I wonder what BMW would be like if it continued to make the new generations of the Isetta.

Mercedes-Benz Big

Mercedes Benz 600 (W100) Grosser.

Pioneering engineering; Perhaps the largest luxury car ever; Undoubtedly you would feel in the back of the back of the royal or Tin-Potdictator who hear it all the other rather pedestrian vehicles with the temerity to be on the same way

Submitted by: BB

There just nothing goes beyond a rough one.

Porsche 959

959 – A Wonder

Waaay had to scroll too far down to find a mention of 959. It is the 959. Full stop.

Submitted by: Dire Wolf, Maxpowers

I am really surprised that more people did not say this. So much cooler than an F40.

E9X BMW M3

E92 M3, basically as close as BMW has ever made a muscle car. If you ask me, none of the M4 models have had the same Swagger since then, and being a V8 has never hurt.

My favorite is and will probably always be the E92 M3 with its high Reving exploding V8. Yes, it is dated and too little compared to its new model/competition. But I am a loser for high reving engines, especially if it is a V8. Sucks that the rod bearings are incredibly unreliable for these and many BMWs of that time, but God, that 8500 Redline.

LOL, I remember that when my family moved to our new house, a telemarketer -showing insurance called and asked if I was driving some older model F150. I think the number that brought up or something, I was like oh no, sir, I drive a CLK GTR (the best car I could think of on the spot to mess with him), and guy lost it. He said almost oh no, we can’t cover such a car. He asked what I did for a living and I said oh I am a neurosurgeon Res. Before you hang immediately, I said, sir, do me a favor, drive it as if you stole it.
