These 8 updates would transform Google Maps into an incredible Road Trip Companion

Many believe in the idea that you should criticize what you love. If that is true, I must have a strong affection for Google Maps. I use this navigation -app almost daily on Android and Android Auto, and every day I am reminded of the missing functions. This is especially clear when I am on a longer ride.

Google Maps is not the ideal road Trip Companion for all purposes. Of course, it brings you from A to B (ultimately), estimates the travel time and offers Turn-by-Turn directions, but that is the absolute minimum that I would expect from every long-distance sturdy tool. It offers the base and stops there. With a few tweaks and additions, maps can become a more effective planning, navigation and discovery instrument for road adventurers.

A distance calculator

I like spontaneous road trips, but I also enjoy plans. I am the type that is happy to prepare for different scenarios or at least have a backup plan. I do this by studying routes in advance, taking up distances between cities or attractions, fuel stops, farm stalls, supermarkets, restaurants and other important points of attention. Currently it is far too cumbersome to calculate theoretical travel distances on Google Maps. A simple solution would be to introduce a Radius tool. This would enable me to easily measure travel times and distances of a central position by emphasizing the area within the given travel carifications.

Given the travel speed and the usual traffic, a Radius tool would be useful if my partner and I, for example, do not want to stay in a city for more than three hours or 150 km further. It would help to plan day trips or view attractions within 30 minutes after our accommodation. I currently have to zoom out and tap every nearby point to check distances and travel times of my original position, but a Radius tool would streamline this process.

Tickets can even contain a “distance in X hour” function that appears during a navigation session, which calculates and displays the likely position of the vehicle within a certain time on the basis of the average speed and route. This would make accurate planning on the road possible.

I recently discussed my cards in a separate position, but this custom mapsmaker is underented in Google Maps. The potential as a tool for planning the road trip is huge, but much of its functionality is limited to web browsers. Although you can open custom cards in Google Maps, it is already.

More control over customized cards within Google Maps can enable users to map attractions and plan routes effectively. With an adapted card repository, users can download cards and seamlessly explore a new city based on the recommendations of other users. Google has a unique opportunity to further use the ingenuity and experience of the community, and I hope it is strongly considering reinventing its adapted card system.

Better List Management

Restegrating my cards in Google Maps is a long -term project, but an immediate update can improve the list of lists. Although lists are accessible in the Google Maps app, their implementation in Android Auto is awkward. This function can be invaluable while driving and offer quick access to stored places. However, there is frustrating trust, especially when Google Assistant and Android Auto do not work together.

I had to trust on lists while driving, because assistant did not recognize ‘at home’, even if it is a stored location. There is also no way to organize lists again, so that relevant locations first appear in the onion on Android Auto. I would appreciate options to archive lists or to hide those I don’t need from Android Auto.

The navigation of Google Maps usually works well, but it can be more accommodating for long -distance travel, which usually stops and starts a trip several times. I would like the option to pause navigation and route tracking. Too often I had to stop navigation when pulling a resting place or gas station, which means that I have to go into my destination again and restart navigation. It is a small annoyance, but this option would make longer journeys more flexible.

Big Picture for a moment, using Google’s AI options, I would also welcome more routing options. We have “tolls avoiding” and similar options, but imagine that you opt for a “picturesque” route option for relaxed disks, a “direct” route for emergency trips, or a “adapted” route selector that leaves room for user preferences such as distance/time, stops, road type and more. It would be useful for crossing a new region in a car.

Context-conscious recommendations

Building on this, I wish Google Maps would better understand my travel intentions. I have previously suggested following wearages and fitness with Android Auto integrating to check fatigue and propose stops, but cards can easily emphasize resting stops using assessments and context directions. Whether it is a tourist place, tank point or a unique location in the dishes, cards can inform me and offer me the choice to stop, similar to how it warns me about police or traffic incidents.

I want to mention my cards again. Such a suggestion function could use a Premade list or points on a modified map. Before I leave, maps could stop me along a route or drawing a customized card. At every stop I would get a pop-up asking if I would like to continue with the stop, keep my primary route intact but offer flexibility.

Connecting some cities in my neighborhood via gravel roads with large routes. It is part of their charm, but I would like to know the condition of the road in advance. Wet winters can make some routes impassable. I rely on Osmand, another mapping -app with OpenStreetMap -data for road and condition information. However, Google Maps can integrate similar data.

It already offers various layers, including satellite images and transport routes; Road Surface info would fit well. It can also visually indicate road surface differences, giving motorists valuable data and peace of mind.

One step further, Google Crowdsourcing of data from the road condition of users who use the current alert pop-up system, or suggest that drivers “assess” a certain route once a trip has ended.

Weather wars and overlay

Few navigation apps offer real-time weather information, but Google Maps can innovate here. Winterwegreizen are my favorite, but they can be treacherous. Rain and wind are common in my environment, and it is important to be prepared because the circumstances can change quickly. I would like an overlay that shows real -time along a route.

In addition, Google Maps can benefit from a simple weather -warning system that updates drivers before and during travel if the circumstances change. This data can be incorporated into the navigation user interface, so that drivers can quickly measure the coming circumstances.

Finally, although I know that Gemini is coming to Android Auto, I am not convinced by Google’s voice assistant in the car. Gemini often struggles with latency on my smartwatch and smartphone, and assistant often assumes me or misunderstands me in my car. Whatever the future is for Google’s speech control, I want a fast, reliable system that contains the aforementioned functions.
